Tech: Shimano Dyna-Sys XTR 10 speed Test days

Recently Shimano invited a select group of media representatives to attend a 2-day camp at the famous Nanjing Botanical Gardens for the purpose of test riding the new 2011 Dyna-Sys XTR Mountain bike set-up. Cyclingnewsasia had two of our guys there to attend the event and gain experience riding the new system Shimano has launched. The new Groupset will be available in Chinese bike shops from September onwards.  Cyclingnewsasia shares our first impressions gleaned from the 2-days of riding as well as comparisons with the old XTR nine-speed group-set.

 


Day One
After eating a hearty breakfast at the Nanjing Dongjiao State Hotel, all the media representatives met outside the lobby decked out in the Shimano provided gear including shoes, clothing, gloves, eye-wear and helmet. We were all taken over to China's first National Garden, having been established in 1929 and located just beside the ancient Ming Dynasty city wall of Nanjing and at the foot of Purple Mountain.  The Dyna-Sys camp was held in the perfect, tranquil surroundings of the gardens. Within the small two square kilometer area, it packed a variety of terrain suitable for testing the new drive-train set up on the various high-end bikes provided by Shimano.

The 3km test loop is also the race course for the 2011 Shimano MTB race late next month and shows off some challenging sections that will require some skillful handling by top riders if they are going to post fast times. However, most of the terrain is suitable for beginners to have a crack and learn the ropes.

After our briefing, we had our choice of some top steeds - we started with the old XTR nine-speed on a hard-tail and followed the group for a leisurely first lap to familiarise ourselves with the equipment and the terrain. Our loop began with a 500m sealed road before launching down a bank onto single-track which snaked through the forest with numerous exposed tree roots and trees to dodge – 30 seconds later we emerged to  tackle a short grassy climb that led us into the next forested section and the first of the real technical sections that most of the test riders struggled with. The loose rocks strewn out on the trail combined with the steepness made it essential to pick a good line and maintain momentum. After successfully tackling this section, we had a brief 10 second respite before a sharp left-hand turn that led to a rock garden climb. Once at the top of the climb, there is some fast flowing single-track that turns into a technical downhill littered with rocks, roots, and drop-offs; not to mention continual tree dodging! After this adrenalin pumping section, we popped out onto pavement again and the rest of the loop winds its way through the forest and creek-side, finishing with a sealed section of about 600m back to the Shimano Dyna-Sys XTR tent area where riders refueled with cold drinks and discussed their first impressions of the new component set-up.

After completing a number of laps on different bikes and eating a KFC lunch, I headed out of the Botanical Gardens, on the Giant Anthem equipped with the XC version of the XTR Dyna-Sys System, to tackle the long 7-8km climb to the top of Purple Mountain. The set-up was a joy to ride and at the top of the climb, I was rewarded with sweeping views of the Lake and the City of Nanjing beyond.

I concluded my day at the Botanical Gardens with a “hot lap” done on the Yeti full-suspended mountain bike equipped with the trail version of the XTR Dyna-Sys. This “hot lap” was designed to test the speed and the feel of components under extreme pressure. The time was a reasonable 7min 45 seconds. It was decided that a proper test be conducted with all three bikes: the hard tail XTR nine speeder, the Giant Anthem with XTR Dyna-Sys XC version and the Yeti. The aim was to ride the “hot lap” as fast as possible and compare the times and ride performance for each.
