Tech Review: Specialized S-Works Team Helmet

I have been riding Specialized helmets since I bought one way back in the late 90's. Back then Specialized was just really gaining a foothold in the helmet game, but they were still a sought after item. The new Specialized S-Works Team helmet has come a long way from those days.

Name/model: Specialized 'S-Works' Team Helmet (red, white and burgundy)
Compatible with: Specialized now offers helmets for both oval and round heads
Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price:
Weight: 225 grams (Medium size)
Company website: www.specialized.com
Competitors: Giro Ionos, Rudy Project Sterling, Giro Pro light . . .

We at CNA recently caught up with Thomas LeCoq, Specialized China's sales manager to get the details on their top helmet – the S-Works.

Marketing blurb

The S-Works is the lightest CPS-certified helmet in the world, worn by Pro teams like Quick Step, Lampre, Lotto and ISD. It’s all about race weight, maximum ventilation and complete comfort

Reality

Indeed Specialized products are being seen more and more on the Pro MTB circuit as well as within the professional peloton. Simply scanning from the ground up on many professional teams, from the super-light S-Works road shoe to Body Geometry Saddles, as well as  the S-Works helmet on test here, you will see how much the big 'S' has world domination in their sights. Watch out for our upcoming test of the Specialized Arc-X Glasses.

Looking fast standing still

The S-Works helmet has a number of interesting design features worth mentioning. Firstly, and relating to the main reason we wear helmets – protection. The core of the S-Works helmet is EPS (the foamy stuff most helmets are made of) the Team helmet has two different types. Without wasting too many words, this lowers the weight and is designed to protect your head better. This may seem like a 'boring' design feature, but it's actually ingenious. The folks at Specialized have used some crash test dummy style laboratory action to compensate for different crash angles. Basically, depending on the angle you crash at, you need a different density of protection to make sure you don't end up a vegetable.

When the aim of the game is safety, I'm glad to say the guys at Specialized are taking their responsibility seriously. With the safety box ticked, of course “coolness” then becomes our next most important feature...

Notice the different coloured EPS (lighter grey) near the straps - a lot of thought has gone into protecting your head

The design is focused around the 'Pro Fit 360' system. According to Specialized this surrounds the riders head 360 degrees and the straps are secured directly to the foam. Helmets, similar to saddles are certainly a personal preference, however I couldn't get used to the straps being connected directly to the outside of the helmet foam – it made the straps feel too far away from my head. With other helmets a pull on the straps can further secure your lid, whereas with the specialized it just pulled the helmet to one side.

The straps are a metallic silver colour which got dirty quite easily, however they were very easy to clean with some mild soap and water. One nice touch I noticed was the finish of the straps, which round off in tidy little rubber 'strap ends' (this saved me cutting access material and having to use a lighter on the ends to make sure they didn't frey). Adjustment was fairly easy with the U-Turn adjusters on the straps, however I didn't find this feature as smooth or easy to use as the adjusters on the Giro Ionos or the Rudy Project Sterling (both currently on test). The closure is the typical plastic buckle, which works well. Specialized has made every effort to shave extra weight from this helmet, meaning the buckle has no excess material and is left with subtle curves that don't agitate the chin in any way..

Specialized retention - simple yet effective

To secure the helmet at the back of your head and thus keep it stable, Specialized uses a very simple retention device, allowing a finer adjustment around the circumference of the skull. The adjustment is simple and effective but does need two hands to adjust properly. Venting is taken care of by about a bazzillion vents  and the lid comes with a (removable) visor if you feel like throwing fashion to the wind.

I tested this helmet at the height of summer (with a number of rides over 40 degrees C – ugh . . ) on a few mountain bikes rides as well as about a dozen road rides. The helmet is noticeably lightweight and does vent extremely well. Interestingly it seems the pads seem to channel sweat or hold sweat, away from your eyes. This is one area where the S-Works beat the Rudy Project Sterling – sweat management.

Carbon re-enforcements protect yer head

The helmet is very secure and never moved during even the bumpiest mountain bikes descents, however it did seem to sit a bit higher on the head than other helmets. As a final nice touch, the S-Works Team comes with an additional set of pads, a helmet bag, and ours even came with a sticker pack!

Pros

  • Brilliant colour selection
  • Extremely lightweight (Lighter than the Giro pro-light?)
  • Very comfortable – no pressure points
  • Minimalist design

Not so Pros . . .

  • Sits a bit high on the head
  • Strap placement not ideal for me

Bottom line
Specialized has designed an extremely lightweight, easy to use product that will protect your head and assist you to look good in the bunch. Their products are tested and refined at the highest level and that's clear with the S-Works Team helmet. For me, I didn't feel like my head was 'inside' the helmet, so I felt 'looks' suffered, however this is purely a personal preference and is easily remedied by a trip to your local Specialized store for a fitting. If you want professional level performance (weight, venting, looks) and like the looks, it's probably the lid for you. Hey, Cadel Evans won a World Championship in one . . . .
