Tech Review: Rudy Project Sterling Helmet

Always wear a helmet (you’ve been told). Cyclingnewsasia would like to put our own spin on things - always wear a COOL helmet, otherwise you look like a dork. Also, take your helmet off when you are not riding a bike . . . ok let’s get on with our review of the Rudy Project Sterling.

Model: Rudy Project Sterling 2010 model

Compatible with: A large range of head shapes

Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: SG280

Weight: 349 grams (M/L)

Company website: www.rudyproject.com

Competitors: Giro Ionos, Specialized S-Works Team, etc.

'Technically cool eyewear' - this is the tag line for Rudy Project in their quest to protect your eyes. What about your head though? Did you know that Rudy Project also produces some extremely high tech helmets to keep your head safe as well?  We caught up with Jason Jong, the Director of RPA Pte Ltd and the official distributor of Rudy Project products in China and Singapore to tap into his knowledge of the Rudy products.

The Rudy project Sterling sits at the top of the Rudy Helmet hierarchy and sells for about $280 Singapore bucks, has 18 vents, weighs in at 349 (M/L) grams, and comes in 12 colours (including fluorescent!). To add to the good news it is also Rudy’s 25th anniversary this year! What better way to celebrate their anniversary than get out and ride one of their most high tech and recently released products?!

Reality
When I first saw the Sterling my initial thoughts were very positive - the colour was white, the weight was low, and it was an easy to use and understand product. Rudy has used a range of proven industry designs to ensure their products technically work. The helmet shell is well constructed, and is a nice matte colour - not super shiny. We like that. The shell also includes the exposed composite 'red skeleton' which also serve to hold on to your sunglasses as well. One nice touch was the use of an internal bug screen to make sure you don't get a bee in your bonnet . . .

The composite red skeleton looked good and held our glasses tight

Moving to the straps, Rudy uses an interesting snap system, and while it is very similar to what everyone else is using, the Rudy buckle is a bit more refined and looks 'technically cooler’. The buckle was easy to adjust and you can adjust it while riding if you can ride with no hands. Finally, Rudy uses a very simple retention device called the '"RS7R Rotating Disk Retention System". At cyclingnewsasia we love designs that are 'moron proof' and the dial is just that. Turn it right it gets tighter, turn it left it gets looser. Simple and effective. Add to that you also get an integrated visor for off road riding, or if you want to look like Lance Armstrong in the classics . . . a very nice touch we noticed was the inclusion of 3 sets of internal pads (silver, red and blue). We chose the blue.

Our first step was to choose between inserting the pad set equipped with a thin mesh screen to keep bugs out of your helmet or the standard helmet padding set. As we rarely see bugs in our area we opted for the standard pad set. Interestingly, we encountered a minor problem here when we realised that there were no instructions in the helmet box for where the pads were supposed to go! We inserted the pads on our own; however it was a bit like putting a puzzle together! Not a big worry, but maybe one to note for the guy who writes the 'how to manual'.

The Rotating Disc System was easy to use but micro-adjustment was tricky

The helmet is designed for a 'European head' meaning it is designed for a slightly more oval head. With this in mind we passed it to our test rider who descends from China and the helmet also had a very favourable fit for him, and he didn't report any pressure points or areas of discomfort.

I have to tell you that I did the hardest race of my life in this helmet. I had been sick for about a month and had only been 'well' for around a week when I had a road race to compete in the local schedule. It was extremely hot, and in my infinite wisdom I decided to ride the 50 km's out to the 75 km race. Basically just after the half way mark in the race I exploded spectacularly.

Why is this relevant to this helmet test?
It was SOOOOO hot. I have never been so hot in a race. The result was an entire bottle of water being dumped on my head each lap and extreme amounts of sweat. This Rudy Project Sterling easily absorbed huge volumes of sweat and water and it did what it could to keep the air flowing through.

Our Sterling was suitable for both oval and round shaped heads

One area that we had a bit of trouble with was when temperatures really got hot and we were sweating profusely. It seemed like sweat would collect right at the front of the helmet and drip directly onto the back of our glasses. Not a big problem (we were wearing the Rudy Project Noyz glasses) - the sweat rolled right off them -  but it made a bit of a mess of the lenses over time.

Pros

  • Good colour selection
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to adjust and very comfortable
  • Bug net! No more wasps caught in helmets!

Not so Pros . . .

  • Fastex buckle didn't offer the minute adjustments we wanted
  • Heavier than other helmets in this range - but do you really want a superlight helmet?

Bottom Line
If you are looking for a 'superlight' helmet, this might not be the best product for you. If you want a helmet that offers you a balance of comfort and protection, and a company that strives to offer designs that are a bit ‘different’ and unique; choose the Rudy.
