Tech Review: Specialized Romin Saddle

I`d given up on ever finding the perfect saddle. For years I'd suffered in grim silence with uncomfortable saddles, after buying one brands model after another in the hope of finding something that didn't make me ache after 60kms . . . then came the Specialized Romin

And then I saw a Specialized Toupe on sale, and decided (wearily) to give it a try. As described in our review of the Toupe, the bike shop owner had me sit on a Specialized `fit pad` - a soft gel seat that measures the width of your sit bones – and recommended to me a 143mm version. I set off the next day for a 140km ride, and to my astonishment I had no pain whatsoever. In fact the saddle supported me so well that I felt like I was hardly touching the pedals, as opposed to previously, when all my weight seemed to be bearing down on them.

I became an advocate of the Toupe, and recommend it to anyone who has saddle trouble.

When the new Specialized Romin arrived in the post however, I was sceptical that it could be an improvement on the Toupe. It looked wider, even though it was a 143mm version. And it felt harder to the touch, with a snub nose that looked too wide too be comfortable.

Reality
Still, I put it on and headed out for a 100km ride, and staight away my worries disappeared. The extra firmness over the Toupe actually is an improvement, giving a very solid feel. Speciaized rate the padding density and base firmness of the Romin as 'medium', but it is quite stiff. However, once again the custom fit means that your sit bones are very well supported, and there are several 'sweet spots' on the saddle, allowing for different positions.

Indeed, the saddle is particularily comfortable when riding in he drops, unlike many saddles which increase the pressure on the soft-tissue areas, causing numbness. The Romin has a cut-out section that runs the length of the saddle, which alleviates pressure on the soft-tissue areas, and a slightly curved shape, unlike the Toupe, which allows a variety of positions – the nose is comfortable when time-trialling, and when climbing you can remain in the saddle and push back on the up-turned rear area.

For the design of the Romin, Specialized consulted Dr. Roger Minkow, who developed the original Body Geometry saddle and has helped with every evolution since, and with Andy Pruitt of the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, the man behind Specialized`s Body Geometry shoes.

The Romin is available in an SL version (which comes in white - ed.) which has hollow titanium rails and weighs 204 grams - the standard Romin is identical in shape but has hollow cromoly rails and a weighs 25 grams more. The saddle is available in 130mm and 143mm widths and three color options.

Bottom Line
I've used this saddle now for several races, including the Tour of Thailand and the Tour of East Taiwan, and have no complaints. All in all this is an excellent saddle, and even an improvement on the Toupe, which is itself a great piece of kit. The Romin is being used by the SaxoBank team this year, and is a particular favourite of Frank Schleck.
