Or should we call it a sit in? How does a cyclist choose the most comfortable pair of shorts for their particular butt? How do they look good, and not go bankrupt? Over the next few weeks we will test a whole range of shorts (think Assos, Pearl Izumi, Tineli, Louis Garneau, and Capo), in different styles, at different price ranges, and we'll try to give you the answers your back side has been looking for.
You have probably seen old photos of the Tour de France where all the riders are wearing the same knicks. Back then shorts were made of wool (think itchy) and there was little by way of variation when it came to design, and say even less for fashion (although those gentlemen were classy - YES). Slowly changes happened and one of the first ways manufacturers sought to improve your knicks was by adding 'panels' to provide a better fit (I'm sure this was in response to some very chafed . . . . 'areas' . . .)
For a second you were thinking all of your problems were solved . . . then came considerable discomfort from the stitching that was holding all of your panels together. This was really rubbing on your . . . 'areas' again. . . so manufacturers thought - 'lets pad that 'area'. A leather pad was then inserted to keep you comfy. Leather wasn't too luxurious a feeling on your crotch however, unless you're a cow and the leather is your own inner thigh, so this gave way to a series of creams to protect your butt. The knicks of today . . .
The challengers . . . .
Pearl Izumi: The Japanese brand has been around for decades and have never been short on innovation. Their latest shorts entitled the 3D Neo were the only shorts in this test to have 'welded seams' and no gel elastic gripper. They were also the only knicks on test that were shorts rather than bibs - but we got over that!

Our initial impressions were excellent and we have to say these were easily the most unique shorts in the test.
Capo: previously known as Capoforma, now just known as Capo, we have on test their Modena knicks. As soon as we opened the packaging on these knicks we agreed that Capo does certainly have performance, comfort and style that transcend the bike! The Modena knicks are a 6-panel short constructed from 'power-lycra' (we think of Power lycra like the Superman of Lycra), a V-Mesh Upper, and silicone leg grippers.

Tineli: Not tremendously well known in Asia, Tineli has previously sponsored Asias favourite team Marco Polo Cycling with their top quality knicks. We have been riding the Tineli Premium Bibshort which Tineli says is the ultimate combination of high quality materials and superb finishing details. Louis Garneau: According to Louis Garneau this product contains more Lycra® than basic knits for full stretch and shape recovery. The knicks compress to support and maximize muscle performance by assisting blood circulation aparently assisting in resistance to fatigue 10% to 20% better. The knicks are said to be UPF/SPF 50 and are 255 g/m², 7.5 oz/sq yd.

Our test (as usual) will be structured to ensure we cover the main 'anatomy' of your shorts, namely the number of panels, the actual type of fabric and its quality level, its retail price, and the Chamois design. We will wear each pair of shorts for similar workouts (indoor and outdoor intervals), rides (long steady distance) and races (mostly hard fast criteriums) for the period of 1 month, and report back to you our findings. We will wash the shorts in the washing machine (not recommended) and generally try to destroy them to discover who makes the best kit for you. Panels - are more better? As we have just discussed, as shorts started to evolve the panel numbers increased. As a basic example cheaper shorts for 'non-competition' use tend to have 2-4 panels and as you get more serious (i.e. racing, randonneuring, elite level stuff) the panel numbers tend to increase. The maximum number of panels we have seen are 12. Effectively if you buy knicks with 6 panels or more the inseam between your legs tends to be eliminated as the shorts are designed for longer or harder rides.

Chamois Design . . .
There is a lot of debate with regard to Chamois design. If we get to the core of riding, basically a good quality Chamois shoud have just enough padding that it takes the edge off - you should not feel like you are wearing a diaper! Some manufacturers have recently completed studies that have shown that more padding can cause problems with circulation and 'numbness'. A very nice addition to newer Chamois are anti-bacterial treatments.
