When our LOOK 595 first arrived my first worry was cutting the seat mast, but the helpful staff at Holy Brother in Beijing helped me relax with clear instructions, and helpful emails. Putting a saw this close to such a beautiful frame is a worry!
Holy Brother supplied a 'saw guide' with the frame so I attached the guide and cut away. I am still amazed at how easy it is to correctly cut an integrated seat mast correctly, but I managed to do it correctly and not damage the beautiful red and white frame!
Look includes three elastomers so you can customise your ride (grey = soft, red = medium, black = hard). To start out with, and due to the roads here in Shanghai I chose the grey elastomer to start with. Similar to using the 'saw guide', installing the elastomer was simple using a 5mm allen key. The design of the seatmast is intuitive. The EPost has a measurement scale on the rear for height, and fore-aft adjustment was a breeze. I actually didn't realise it, but the 595 would also be an excellent bike for triathletes as the seatpost head is reversible allowing triathletes to get further over the bottom bracket for an efficient TT positon. All of this setup only took me about 1/2 hour + email time with Holy Brother and I was ready to ride.
How does it ride? This is a race bike. As soon as you get in the saddle you can feel that this is a bike designed by racing cyclists, for racing cyclists. Unfortunately for the tester, this bike had few flaws, it showed excellent comfort on longer rides and sprinted like a rocket. Cornering was sharp, and the bike cornered better than the rider. . . .I sincerely think the EPost changes how this bike rides for the better. To test comfort, for rides over 3.5 hours I deliberately stayed in the saddle over rough sections of road to see how my body would hold up - when I arrived home from my rides I still felt good with no stiffness in my lower back. As per usual, I integrate test bikes into my typical weekly training routine. This varies depending on what races are coming up, but as I was reaching the end of the season I was mostly performing short, hard sprint efforts as well as some long rides. As I have stated before, I am certainly not going to challenge Gao Ya Hui in a sprint, but certainly I pushed the bike as hard as possible and didn't detect a hint of bottom bracket flex. The fork is also 100% carbon and there was no brake rub at the front of the bike.
This was my first ride on the new Campagnolo 11 speed (I know, I'm a bit late) and it is brilliant. I deliberately put the bike in the 53 x 11 and put as much pressure on the chain as I could and proceeded to shift. The new Campy kit virtually laughed at my effort, and shifted easily without hesitation. The Fulcrum wheels accelerated with ease and continued to do so throughout the test.
The Bottom Line If you are looking for one of the best 'all round' bikes that money can buy you wouldn't be too far off looking at a LOOK 595. If you can afford a bike at this level, you will not be dissapointed. . . unless you lose the sprint to the finish line.
