While vacationing in Italy this year I had the opportunity to cross the border into Switzerland and visit the original Assos store to learn more about their products and brand.

 

The SS Uno Jersey - an instant classic

 

I will leave the story of the trip for another time, but suffice to say the riding around Lake Como is easily some of the best in the world. So what about this kit from Assos?

 

We have been riding and testing the Assos kit now for about six months. We received the S5 bib shorts, the hotSummerinteractive undershirt (yes that's really the name), the SSUno jersey as well as a set of Assos arm and knee warmers. The pricing on these garments is by far the highest on the market. We were keen to find out why, and if you as a consumer should pay the money for this clothing. Plain and simple.

In the cycling industry Assos has gained an enviable reputation for 'the most comfortable knicks on the market'. But at what price? A pair of Assos shorts will cost you, on average around USD $200, or about CNY1400. These are the middle level knicks with the top end F1 13 S5 bib shorts fetching USD $359 or CNY2500. As mentioned, the S5 bib shorts lies mid way up Assos clothing hierarchy. They are built with Assos new 430 fabric for more durability and more compression - it's also supposed to breathe. The shorts also feature overlocked seams, 6 panel construction, 'welded' leg grippers, a small jar of chamois cream, and a small bottle of cleanser for the shorts.

 

Assos takes a middle stance on aesthetics with their designs being neither over the top, or boring. Once I had the Assos kit at home I was almost reluctant to get it sweaty or dirty. The clothing is beautifully made: classy, robust, and still made in Europe. However, as soon as I was home the rain started and I was forced to wear 'other kit' for fear of getting the Assos duds dirty or stained. As mentioned I have now had the kit for six months and I have thoroughly enjoyed putting the kit through its paces in training. I haven't raced in the kit - if I crashed and ripped it I don't know what I would do. More on that later. . .

History

To provide a bit of background on how Assos came to be we magically whisk you back to the 1970's (whoosh). As many cycling stories happen, Assos founder Tony Maier Moussa was developing the first carbon fibre bicycle frame. It was hard work, as carbon was not readily available in those days, and Tony had to obtain special military clearance in order to get the materials. Tony is said to have created the first ever bike with tear drop shaped tubes, with the assistance of some engineers from Zurichs Technical University. During all the component testing the engineers noted that a great deal of drag was created by the riders woolen clothing. So they put the rider on the bike naked. . . . apparently your skin also creates drag (darn skin!), so Toni and his wife (who happened to be a textile engineer), and their friend Hans Hess (a swiss producer of downhill ski racing suits) created a lycra skin-suit which fit like a second skin and showed to greatly reduce drag.

There was one problem. Most riders thought it was crazy and didn't like it. Toni wasn't put off and went to Peter Post, who was then the Director of the worlds best cycling team (Ti-Raleigh). Post basically forced some of his riders to wear the shorts and the rest is history. By the end of the 70's Tonis' idea had been widely copied and almost every rider in the professional peloton was wearing lycra shorts.

Reality

In the name of journalistic integrity we pushed this product to the limit. Our test rider was totally focused on testing how comfortable the knicks were, so we proceeded to have him complete three, four hour rides (2 back to back) without, literally getting out of the saddle. His feedback was:

  • These are the most comfortable knicks I have ever worn by far
  • I feel like I get better support
  • The full set of kit fits more like a skinsuit than a set of knicks and jersey
  • Each small detail with these shorts seems to be thought of
  • My butt doesn't hurt. . .
  • The zippered pocket is perfect for money and iPod
  • What a brilliant idea to have a small 'headphone hole' in the zippered pocket!

Then our test rider got hit by a motor scooter which wasn't paying attention and hit him from the rear side, sending him over the handlebars at 40km/h while wearing this kit. He landed flat on the pavement skidding for several meters. The shorts did not rip. The shorts did not scuff. The shorts show no sign of sliding along pavement. The jersey ripped the rear pocket, and scuffed the shoulder.

 

As previously mentioned, we were scared to get this kit stained in bad weather. After the scooter accident the jersey had quite a lot of blood on it. The jersey came completely clean using the Assos cleanser.

Feel/Fit

We don't need to go into this too much. Read the other reviews of this product, it fits, and it keeps you very comfortable for long rides. Looks are a personal preference, but we also like the look and colours of the product.

Bottom Line:

 

Assos is expensive. Our impressions are that it is better quality, more durable, and supplied with nice extras (chamois cream, washing bag and cleanser) to balance it's higher cost. This is another product I actually wanted to find a problem with, but have yet to. The bottom line is, unfortunately if you have the money, they you should pick up some of their kit and try it for yourself. You won't be dissapointed.
