The Jawbone now takes over the top cycling spot in Oakleys range from the extremely popular Radar, and you may have noticed key members of the Marco Polo cycling team wearing the new Jawbones during their successful ride at this years Tour of Qinghai Lake.

When I sat down with the boys from Oakley I was presented with the new Jawbones just prior to their release in China, they were thoughtful enough to provide us with Jawbones that match the Cyclingnewsasia (called 'Retina Burn' by Oakley) colours which was a brilliant stroke of luck. If you are looking for glasses that stand out, and come in a huge array of colours buy the Jawbones. Colours aside, a few people commented that they looked 'industrial', 'high-tec', 'fly-like', 'sick', as well as 'huge'. The looks of sunglasses are best left to personal preference, so I will say that I do like the look of the glasses as I think they look 'pro'. However, they are not 'Euro'.

In terms of protection/functtion, one thing that was immediately noticable was the bulkiness of the frame, strangely the hinge at the bottom outside of the lens sits directly in line with your peripheral line of sight. The idea behind the "Switchlock" technology is brilliant, however in races or rides it was inconvenient when I wanted to shoulder check and check the positioning of other riders. On the positive side, you could consider the extra frame material more effective in protecting a larger area around your eyes.

The metal inside hinge is easy to adjust but was placed in our line of sight Feel/Fit I can report the glasses are very easy to tailor to your face, and the first thing I did was to change the nose bridge rubber to make sure they fit my face properly. Eric Peng from Oakley also twisted, and bent the frames around (this always makes me queasy) to demonstrate superior engineering, flexibility and durability. Included in the package are 3 different sets of nose grippers and the usual Unobtainium ear sleeves, so you can customize your glasses to fit your face individually. This makes the glasses a go for people with both flat and high bridged noses – GREAT!

The exciting thing about the Jawbone actually relates to my previous rant about the Radars – the amount of pressure on the lens. There is none. If there is no pressure on the lenses of your glasses, this means there should be no optical distortion, provided the lenses are high quality (which Oakleys' are). The other added bonus to this design is no pressure on the lenses makes them VERY EASY TO CHANGE QUICKLY AND AS OFTEN AS YOU WANT. This is due to the new Switchlock technology. Basically, beside the nosepiece there is a notch (see picture above), you pull up, and VOILA! The notch releases, and the bottom of the frame opens on a sturdy looking metail hinge. For this reason the lenses ‘float’ in the frame.
A few people have asked me about the durability of Oakleys products. Case in point, see the photo above. My racing jackets are now 11 YEARS OLD and the only reason I don’t wear them any more is because the paint started to peel on the frames last year. As well, an excellent test is to twist and bend the frames of another pair of glasses. I will guarantee 95% of other brands will snap far before your Oakleys do. Convinced?
To come back to the lenses. . . . they are impact resistant, and the optics are noticably excellent.
