Beautiful frame etching sets Rikulaus' frames apart
If you haven't heard of Rikulau you are not alone. Rikula was established in March 2006 by a 7 people: a Bicycle Mechanical Engineer, bicycle exporter, University Professor, Accountant, Environmental Engineer, and an Artist. Their backgrounds are different, but they shared a common dream of bringing the spirit of the legendary Rikulau animal into the bicycles that roll along our roads and mountains with agility, speed and style.
The Rikulau 953 . . .
The Rikulau name relates to the sacred animal of the Rukai people (a Taiwanese aboriginal tribe). Rikulau is the name of the clouded leopard in their language. The legend says that 700 years ago, a group of Rukai ancestors followed the footprints of Rikulau to find a forever land for their children. They left the East coast, and went up stream into the deepest forests of the mountainous areas of Southern Taiwan. They finally settled at the foothills of Da-Wu mountain where the footprints of Rikulau stopped.
The Rikulau is the biggest feline animal on the island of Taiwan. It is said to be extremely smooth, and fast, and is the best climber among all wild cats. The legend says that the Rikulau is the fairy that bridges the dreams between people and nature. It is the incarnation of agility, speed and style.

The bike I tested was constructed entirely from Reynolds 953 Stainless Steel. This is an absolutely beautiful material, and when many riders in the peloton are still opting for the stiffness of Aluminium, it's evident that riders are still choosing bikes based on pure stiffness - these riders will be excited to hear about the Rikulau. Reynolds 953 is also a bit more exotic, and should be better equipped to compete with the sex appeal of carbon fibre.

The downtube on the Rikulau 953 is not the huge beefy tube that seems to be fashionable right now, rather it is quite svelte and looks almost tiny in contrast to the huge diametre tubes currently en vogue. The weld quality is above average which is impressive given the reputation Reynolds 953 has as being more difficult to weld than titanium. While the frame is Reynolds 953, the fork is an all Carbon Easton EC90 SLX (325g).
Welds were consistent and well presented overall How does it ride? Stiff and efficient without beating you up. This is my first ride on a Reynolds 953 frame and I was impressed. Rikulau has combined the simplicity of a triple triangle frame with a beautiful polished finish complete with some tidy etching. This bike will turn heads, as it blends a slightly retro and highly classy package with new, top level precision components. This bike can handle whatever you throw at it with ease, and look good doing it.
SRAM provided the components which worked flawlesslessly throughout the test
With an effective Top tube of 525mm, the geometry on the Small sized Rikulau was a 71.5 degree top tube angle mated to a 74 degree seat tube angle, and a wheelbase of 964.9mm. It felt tight and agile while cruising at speed. Let's be frank, Carbon fibre is what consumers are fixated on at the moment so other materials such as steel, titanium and aluminium are not in focus - this doesn't mean they are of less quality. Riding the Rikulau you can feel the efficiency of the frame. When riding one will notice everything about the road surface, however the the component specification of our test bike balanced beautifully. You could feel the stiffness of the frame, however the Deda bar and stem took the edge off road buzz and the Deda seatpost eliminated harshness before it got to your butt. The seatpost was my least favourite part of this test as it slipped and moved every hard bump in the road no matter how much I tightened it. The Selle Italia SLR Titanium saddle is one of my favourites and always keeps me comfortable.

When looking at the small diametre of the tubes on the frame, and bottom bracket shell it is difficult to ascertain why this frame is so stiff, but it still had absolutely solid power transfer through the rear wheel.

When cornering I struggled to find the bikes limits on tight or wide corners, and with the aid of the excellent @OM wheels the bike was always stable and predictable. The @OM wheels were interesting - they are not a brand I had previously heard of, but at 1570g for my clincher wheelset with 20 front (Sapim CX-Ray) spokes, 24 rear, and a 50 mm profile carbon rim, I actually pedaled corners which I never though possible! When exiting corners, the lightness of the wheels, and direct power transfer of the frame allowed me to accelerate back to cruising pace with minimal effort. Acceleration was also aided by the fact that the Rikulau 953 is impressively light for a non-carbon framed bike at 7.2 kg. One minor gripe would have been the brakes which didn't have the carbon specific brake pads to suit the wheels - this is an easy fix and not a major issue. Going back to the wheels we are hoping for a longer term test so we will keep you posted.
@OM wheels were a pleasant surprise The Bottom Line Rikulau still isn't a well known brand in Asia, outside Taiwan (yet). But, If you are looking for a bike and brand that will set you apart in your local peloton the Rikulau is for you. At 7.22 kg (w/o pedals) and with the top level SRAM Red components, not to mention the brilliant @OM wheels the Rikulau is designed to race (or just go very fast while riding).
