Tech Review: Specialized BG S-Works Road Shoe

Specialized is now one of the world leaders in cycling shoes. We got our hands on a pair of their Body Geometry S-Works road shoes to see what all the hype was about. . .

Black, silver and gold - a great looking shoe

Name/model: 2009 Specialized BG (Body Geometry) S-Works Road Bike Shoe (watch for a test on the 2010 model coming soon)

Compatible with: All major pedal manufacturers and most peoples feet!

Weight: According to Specialized this is the “Worlds lightest shoe with a mechanical closure”

Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price: CNY 2490

Company website: www.specialized.com

Competitors: Sidi Ergo Carbon 6.6, Lake CX401 (watch for an upcoming review!)

As soon as I saw these shoes I liked them. There was just something about them – even though they aren’t white. Here in Shanghai, these shoes have been made popular not only due to their fit and strong reputation, but due to the ongoing dominance of Team Specialized in Mountain Bike and Road racing events around the China mainland. Amateur riders like Piers Touzel (multiple winner of the Huangshan MTB race, and generally super strong mountain bike guy), Chia Kung (Shanghai sprinter extraordinaire), and Simon Cui (Don’t even try to sit on his wheel when he wants to go), have really shown off the Specialized brand exceptionally well. The worst part is, they are all nice guys.

The S-Works is the only model that features the Powerzone lacing in the 2009 line and features the BOA dial closure system.

Boa lacing - simple to use. Pull out to loosen, push in and turn to tighten

Marketing blurb

“The first choice of our European Pro racers for its high performance and Roubaix-enduring comfort, our feature-packed S-Works Road also takes the podium for being the lightest road shoe with a mechanical closure and Body Geometry technology.”

Reality

Well, to be honest many of the Euro guys were riding a different model (the S-Works Elite) because it was a bit lighter. These are great shoes though – they certainly look Euro.

Look

The white vs. black shoe debate is in full force today (if you were unaware of the battle have a please see http://cyclingshoesonline.com/uncategorized/lance-armstrong-always-wears-black-shoes/ or http://www.europeloton.com/2009/01/great-cycling-shoe-debate-whit-looks.html), colour aside, I found the Specialized a sharp looking shoe. The BOA lacing system looks cutting edge, and is a nice change from the typical 3 Velcro strap look. Please ensure you wear them with a black or silver sock . . .

Black silver and gold - very sharp looking. . .

Finish work on the Specialized was top class. One of the first things I check on a new pair of shoes, especially shoes with this kind of price tag, is their finish. This includes pulling out the insoles and checking the stitch work, checking the seams where the sole meets the upper for excess glue, gaps, or general poor quality assurance and a range of other items. I can report that my test shoes were very well presented, with no major flaws to speak of, and continued to impress with their class. Upper quality is excellent with a stout and durable feel, while still staying supple – just waiting to clock up the kilometers.

Uppers were very neatly finished, and easy to clean. Quality assurance was top notch

Near where we live here in China there is a great deal of construction and the dust in the air, combined with the roads we ride can really get shoes dirty. The Specialized Micromatrix upper has been very durable, water resistance and very easy to clean.

Feel/Fit

Specialized boss Eric Koh was good enough to have me into the Shanghai office to explain to me the principles for the Specialized Body Geometry System, and while Eric didn’t want to ‘talk tech’ for hours on end, his final words were: “Just wear them!” Wise words indeed, as the first thing I noticed while trying the shoes on in the shop was how easily they fit. By easily, I mean they were easy to put on and fast – very little Velcro or other gimmicks, just open the Boa Lacing system pull up and put foot in. Tightening was easy with a few twists of the BOA dial. I would think they must be very popular with the Triathlon crowd for this.

The second thing I noticed was how there were absolutely no points on the shoe where there was pressure on my foot. I tightened them as much as I possibly could – no pressure points – AMAZING.

BOA lacing was very effective and effectively smooths out any pressure points

Turning the shoe over in your hand you will find a rating scale on the bottom of the carbon sole. Initially the scale just went to 10, however I have been told that with the new 2010 models which have recently been released the stiffness measure now goes to 11! Installation of my Speedplay cleats was very easy with no issues to report.

Very stiff soles and a great upper combined to make an excellent package

How do they ride? I started with a quick spin on the rollers to check the fit. These shoes are amazing as they seemed to immediately align my legs and knees. I have always had problems with my IT bands, and I could feel immediately the problems were over if I stuck with these shoes. Once again there were no issues with pressure points, but on the rollers both of my feet went numb after about 15 minutes. I was a bit concerned, so I jumped off the bike and loosened both shoes including the Velcro. I jumped back on hoping for the best and I wasn’t disappointed, the numbness quickly went away and I was spinning just fine. I had planned a big riding weekend as we have so many products to test I was a bit overwhelmed! We decided to spend the weekend in beautiful Moganshan for some great food, beautiful weather, and brilliant riding, including the odd Mountain! Test conditions were ideal with extremely high temperatures to test the ventilation and even a walking spell after I ran out of tubes and had to walk home!

Inspecting the sides of the shoes you can see silver mesh areas. The mesh ventilates the foot quite well, to the extent that I could feel the air moving through the shoe, on the hottest days during use (approaching triple digits), my feet never felt overheated.

Now I have always had problems with ‘hotspots’ or numbness in my feet on long rides. It is a problem I have just gotten used to, and I must report that the Specialized didn’t rid me of this problem just yet. After 3 hours in the saddle my left foot was numb, but it was expected.

Looking inside the shoe - ventilation is plentiful. Large vents on the left and small vents in the toe box

To ensure is doesn’t seem like the Specialized are to blame I will be trying to fix the problem in 2 ways – Custom e-soles and a change of cleat position. Watch this space for the result.

Features

I haven’t had the opportunity to test many shoes with mechanical closures, however according to Specialized this model is the ‘lightest production road shoe with a mechanical closure (approx 250g, size 42.5)’. At no time when riding did I notice any issues with the weight of these shoes. Honestly, unless you are losing Le Tour by 5 seconds you don’t need to worry about the weight of your shoes. . . .

In my opinion, the outstanding feature of the BG S-WORKS ROAD SHOE is the 1.5mm “Varus” wedge that brings more of your instep in contact with the pedal. Specialized points out that very often a person’s big toe will rest higher than their little toe. When you’re on a bicycle this Varus angulation can cause your leg to go out of alignment during each stroke. For examples of this, the next time you ride with your local group watch riders knees – you will more than likely see someone who has their need pedaling a ‘figure 8’. This can not only hinder efficiency but possibly place added strain on your knee joints and possibly lead to injuries. Think of the cylinders in a car – they move straight up and down to provide power – not in a figure eight.

To quote Specialized literature
By placing the foot in a neutral position through out the pedal stroke, the knee is allowed to move in a nearly vertical line, improving comfort and efficiency. BG Shoes work because of three unique features: the Varus Wedge, Longitudinal Arch, and Metatarsal Pad. The Varus Wedge is designed to support the forefoot in its natural hanging position. It elevates the inside of the forefoot by 1.5mm so it cannot collapse on the down stroke, which keeps the knee from moving laterally under load. When the knee is aligned , both comfort and performance are improved . . . Performance gains are realized because the muscles that stabilize the knee are no longer recruited to control excess movement, so that energy can be spent on propulsion or saved for later efforts.

An efficient shoe that will help you go faster with less discomfort

Bottom Line

Quite simply, these shoes will make you go faster, further and ride more comfortably. Watch out for a 2010 review of the WHITE Specialized. . .

Very Pro!

  • Ride efficiency – direct power/energy transfer from shoe to pedal with extreme comfort
  • Body Alignment – knees felt properly aligned and biomechanically correct – this feels amazing by the way . . .
  • Classy looks, excellent construction, and top notch attention to detail (even if they are black. . .)
  • Well made vented shoe bag included in package
  • Just try them!

Not so pro. . .

  • Pricey! The Specialized BG retails for CNY 2,490
  • Numbness after 3 hours. . .but this is common for the test rider

The rider

Height: 185cm  Weight: 67kg
Gender: Male     Years riding experience: 13 years
Type of riding done mostly: Mountain biking, road racing, road training and CROSS!

Our reviewer has previously worn shoes from Sidi, Bontrager, Pearl Izumi, and Diadora. Over the years he has found Sidi to fit his feet very well overall, all that may now change with Specialized Body Geometry. . .
