China Trek Racing's Liu Heng takes consecutive win, but aggressive riding takes Specialized Simon Cui out in crash – Gutong's Shen Jiachen seizes chance to extend lead.

It was a hot smoldering Shanghai day as the elite grade lined up for Round Six of the Trek Shanghai Series presented by Powerbar. The heat was almost unbearable for the racers who were faced with the prospect of racing on what is arguably the toughest circuit so far, with three 180 degree turns and two climbs per lap. The course offered no shade, and was exposed to the burning mid-day sun; it was a brutal race with all the accelerations out of the 180 degree turns and intense competition for the water bottles on the climb! You could almost smell the burning rubber as riders braked for the corners and re-accelerated to 45km/h!

As usual, the early pace was set by Fredrik Croneborg who had the riders lined up in single file but was unable to get his customary early break. With no-one getting away before the intermediate sprints on lap two and three, riders were jostling for position in their attempt to collect some points. The key was to be at least top three coming out of the final 180 turn, otherwise you'd be out of contention. The first intermediate sprint saw Daniel Carruthers (Champion System) just edge out current Green jersey holder, Cui Yinhao (China Trek Racing) by the slimmest of margins with a bike throw. Going into the second intermediate sprint, Li Jun (Specialized) and Jin Song (Gu Tong) had snuck away and were looking to take away the points. This forced Carruthers (Champion System) to start his sprint 500m from the final corner. Cui Yinhao (China Trek Racing) was locked securely to his wheel and was able pull past Carruthers to claim second position behind the Specialized rider. After the initial fireworks, the next few laps were a bit more steady till a mid-race flurry of attacks went. Due to the nature of the course, it was always going to be hard for a breakaway to succeed.

Yesterdays race was a tough battle for yellow Photo Vision Black

The tough course weeded out a few of the weaker riders while a good number were just riding in survival mode for the entire race; one racer registering an average heart rate of 188bpm for the whole race! The GC contenders were all featured up the front, especially Yellow clad Shen Jianchen (Gutong) the series leader. Every threatening move that went off the front, the top six or seven riders on GC where all up there. Around the mid-way point in the race there was an excellent move that had Simon Cui (Specialized), Fredrik Croneborg (Chain Sprockets-Wiliers), Shen Jiachen (Gutong), Wilhelmus Neijssen (Specialized) and Daniel Carruthers (Champion System) all represented in a potential breakaway. However, there was no cohesion between the riders and the dangerous looking break was quickly shut-down on the climb.

With four laps remaining, Gary Loafman (Specialized) made an audacious solo attempt for the win and was helped by his Specialized Team who shut down any attacks that tried to bridge across to Loafman. Their impeding tactics were working untill some of the heavy hitters started attacking, and Loafman was eventually caught with 1.5 laps remaining. It was altogether for an exciting bunch sprint; a first in a long time as most of the Shanghai races have been dominated by breakaways. However during the final lap, with riders jostling for position, just 1km from the finish-line was when disaster struck. Simon Cui (Specialized) was struck from behind by a rider wearing a Jelly Belly skinsuit who was being aggressive in his attempt to get into a better position. The action by the Jelly Belly rider caused Cui to swerve violently and led to the crash. This also took out Daniel Carruthers (Champion System), Wilhelmus Neijssen (Specialized) and one China Trek Racing rider. With the top Specialized top two contenders out of the picture, it left the road wide open for Shen Jiachen (Gutong) to further establish his lead with his solid third placing in the final sprint behind his Jelly Belly team-mate.

China Trek Racing's young rider, Liu Heng won easily, overpowering second placed Jelly Belly clad Xu Chao by at least three bike lengths. Gutong's Peng Akang finished in forth position ahead of team-mate Jin Song. Fredrik Croneborg (Chain Sprockets-Wiliers) finished surprisingly well in sixth place in a finish that does not suit the breakaway specialist. Croneborg should now be in second place overall for the series behind Shen Jiachen (Gutong) with Zhang Yufei (China Trek Racing) in third.

The battle for the Green jersey continues to heat up between Cui Jinhao (China Trek Racing), Fredrik Croneborg (Chain Sprockets-Wiliers) and Daniel Carruthers (Champion System). Barring any mishaps, it is highly likely that Cui Jinhao (36 points) will hold on to his sizable lead over Croneburg (28 points) and Carruthers (24 points). It is only Croneborg that can threaten Cui's Green Jersey with only one race with sprint points remaining.

Liu Heng rode very smart to win a very tough race for Trek China Photo Vision Black

The battle for the Yellow Jersey now looks like a three-way battle between Shen Jiachen, Fredrik Croneborg and Zhang Yufei (China Trek Racing). Shen has 119 points and Croneborg is on 114, just 5 points adrift. Cyclingnewsasia predict that it will come down to the time-trialing skills on the final day and Croneborg just might have an advantage over Shen Jiachen due to his experience on the pro IM circuit. The crash that took out four of the top six contenders which will change the series into a two man affair with 4 points separating Croneborg and Shen Jiachen. The series will have to take some more serious twists and turns for any other riders to make a comeback to claim Yellow.
