Anuar Manan takes out Tour of Ganzhou - Specialized newest recruit Anuar Manan, a professionally imported Malaysian “pistol”, used his superior sprint to over-power his four breakaway companions taking the grand prize of CNY 50,000 (about $7,500 US)!

He created history as the first Malaysian to win a stage at the Tour of Langkawi. He also featured prominently in other major UCI races in Asia such as the Tour of Thailand. He was always going to be the man to watch and sure enough, Specialized fired their shot with their “pistol”.

The teams with the biggest presence was Specialized and Champion System with two teams respectively; it was going to be a three way battle between Specialized, Champion System and the HKCSC teams for overall team honors as well as the individual rankings. It was a well organized event put on by the People’s Government of Ganzhou and the Sports Bureau of Jiangxi Province that had riders enjoying every bit of their stay in Ganzhou hosted by the five-star Jinjiang Hotel. It was a surprise to most riders that they were given such five-star treatment including excellent meals and afternoon tours to see the Song Dynasty Walls.

It was an interesting spectacle of a race as there was a wide range of abilities lining up - a good representation of foreigners living in China were present including people from South Africa, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, USA, and Europe. About half of the field was considered to be of "elite" standards with the rest just there for the fun and atmosphere. The first 30 ams of the race was raced over super-smooth undulating highway with several short climbs; the average speed for this section was high, just like any professional race, nearing an average of 30mph (50km/h) with many attacks going up the road. However, due to the high pace, all escapees were brought back into the fold. The only attack that stood any chance was an excellent move by Simon Cui (Specialized) who timed it when riders were recovering. Initially Cui had a Champion System rider with him, but he was forced to do much of the work if the break was going to succeed.

Another rider from the Taiwanese team bridged across to form a break that threatened to steal the race. The high speeds kept up after entering the 10km circuit section of the race, where racers had to complete six laps. The breakaway was caught during the second lap and more riders launched attacks themselves each time chased down by Champion System and Specialized, who were interested in keeping the peloton together for a bunch sprint for their sprinters. Daniel Carruthers (Champion System) launched a succession of attacks on consecutive laps that strung out the field. During the second big move, the pack splintered and the momentum generated allowed Anuar Manan to counter-attack over the short rise through the feed-zone; the pack at this point was split into a front group of about 15 riders with the main bunch gapped off the back by about 100 metres, but the lack of co-operation between the lead-riders extinguished the opportunity they had to establish an advantage.

This was perfect for the riders who managed to bridge across to Manan and establish a strong five-man breakaway including ex-Hong Kong National rider riding for Champion System. The five riders worked well together to extend their lead to the finish. Despite efforts by the ex-Hong Kong National rider and the others, they were unable to shake the Malaysian speedster and it was Manan who took the fine win with a time of 1hr 47mins to complete the 90kms.
