Mehdi Sohrabi (Tabriz Petrochemical) won the ferocious bunch sprint to head off Ruslan Tleubayev (Kazakhstan National Team) and the Green jersey winner, Boris Shpilevskiy (Russian National Team) coming in third position.

How it unfolded - Punchy Sohrabi has final say
The win capped off the Iranian domination of the Tour with their team-mate Hossein Askari (Tabriz-Petrochemical) winning the overall honors at the Tour of Qinghai Lake (why don't these guys ever race in Europe? - ed). He was proud to be clad in the resplendent yellow jersey for his Tabriz team. The Croatian National Champion, Radoslav Rogina (Loborika) was second 44 seconds behind Askari. Jelly Belly p/b Kenda's Kiel Reijnen moved back up to third position with an outstanding ride winning two intermediate sprints to claim valuable bonus seconds to get back past Mitja Mahoric (Slovenian National Team).

Sprint king Boris Shpilevskiy in the Green Jersey on the final day in Xining city
More than 50,000 people turned out to watch the final stage of the Qinghai Lake Tour held in the town centre of Xining. Racing was fast and furious from the gun – averaging close to 50km/h. Numerous breakaway attempts were reeled in by the Tabriz Petrochemical Team who patrolled on the front. It was not till after the halfway mark of the 66km event, that a breakaway of five consisting of Joe Cooper (Subway-Avanti), Jiang Kun (Chinese National Team), Thomas Rabou (Team Type 1) Vitaliy Kondrut (ISD-Neri) and Gregor Gazvoda (KTM-Gebruder Weiss). Their ambitious attempt was thwarted by a hard charging peloton, led by the Tabriz Petrochemical Team, that was interested in a bunch finish. The speed in the last few laps was over 50km/h and provided the local Xining residents with some blurry action.

TT1 founds their legs and started blurring our camera with their speed!
"TPT worked very hard to bring back the break in the closing stages of the race and then we left it to the Russians and Amore & Vita to put together the leadout trains in the last lap. It worked well for us that the Amore & Vita train went a little early… Shpilevskiy was behind them and then our guy" said Tobias Erler (Tabriz Petrochemical), "Askari surprised the Amore & Vita guys by doing an early lead out at 500m to go and this made it all lined up and good for our sprinter in the last 200m."

China National team (red and yellow) rode a very agressive race
Erler also said "it was a strange race initially as the Croatian team wanted to slip the bunch at the mid-stage as they thought the Yellow jersey was out the back. So I led Askari back up to the front to show them that Yellow was still in the bunch."
Subway-Avanti's Joe Cooper on the breakaway:
"I saw it forming up the road, a couple of guys already away – then I was like I gotta be there just to give myself a chance of a result. I just picked my moment and jumped across – I took someone with me and we took two straights to get across. We started working for the 2.5 laps we were away for. It was hard work, it was on the rivet from the word go – full gas" he said. "Once we were caught, I had nothing left and just cruised to the finish line."

Subway Avanti's Joe Cooper suffering but making up ground
The Tabriz Petrochemical Team Manager was extremely proud of his team for taking the overall win, the Best Asian rider and the best Mountain climber. "Our team is about team-work and the Yellow jersey was our main focus and the win today by Mehdi was a pleasant bonus," he said. "We are extremely happy with our achievements this year." The Tabriz team is looking to go to France in August for some racing and then return for the Tour de China in October.

Askari (TPT) surprises the bunch and even takes the final sprint
The world's highest, and probably toughest, epic stage race has now come to an end with the riders completing almost 1,200kms over the nine days at an average elevation of over 3,000m. Riders and spectators were treated to some fantastic scenery and hospitality along the way as you can see from the numerous photographs displayed here on cyclingnewsasia.

The final jerseys (l-r): Hossein Askari (Yellow Jersey - TPT), Ghader Mizbani (Mountains - TPT), Boris Shpilevskiy (Sprint - Russia)
------------------------
note: The truck that was transporting the bikes from Stage eight back to the base broke down in the middle of the mountains and had many riders worried about not starting the final stage - the truck finally rolled in at around mid-night amidst cheers from the mechanics and team managers who had stayed up waiting for the arrival of the bikes. They then had to service the bikes for the last stage!
