A brilliant leadout by his Russian National Team that survived the 15km climb gave Boris Shpileveskiy a convincing win over Mehdi Sohrabi (Tabriz-Petrochemical) and Iglinskiy Valentin (Kazakhstan National Team). The win has also virtually secured Shpileveskiy the Green jersey in the Sprint Ace competition, barring any accidents or dramatic turnarounds. Shpileveskiy was the best of the sprinters that made it over the last KOM climb in the front group. In the lead-up to the finish, five of Shpileveskiy’s team-mates were rotating hard on the front while the Russian sprinter was cruising at the back – waiting for the killer punch!

The Slovenia National Team moved Mahoric Mitja (Slovenia) up into third position overall ahead of Kiel Neijen (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda) through some great team work and co-operation with the Russians in securing bonus seconds at the intermediate sprints. Their lead-out train of seven riders ensured that their key man got the three bonus seconds required to move up one spot on GC. They also used this same tactic to get ahead of David McCann (Giant Asia) during Stage seven.

Despite the long 15km climb going up to almost 3,800m, it was not steep enough to break-up the field completely as just over half the peloton contested the finish. The long speedy down-hill run also contributed to the merging back of riders that were just off the back when cresting the summit. An early breakaway of six riders went clear after the first climb but never got more than a minute advantage on the peloton that was just cruising along at times. After the fireworks of Stage six when the Iranian Tabriz team secured Yellow, they have been mostly defending their lead and not launching their trademark string of attacks that regularly blew apart the race. They also have enlisted the help from a few of the teams to help with the pace-making on the front of the peloton.

Stage Eight of the Qinghai Lake Tour started in the beautiful town of Qilian – also dubbed as the Switzerland of China with its numerous pine trees, imposing rocky mountains, and vibrant colorful fields. The stage began with a neutral 3km circuit of the town that was filled with crowds eager to see the Tour pass by and traversed 150kms to the township of Qingshizui with an average speed of 44.7km/h!

The Qinghai Lake Tour is finally coming to a close with the Xining 5.5km street circuit that will be filled to the brim with the local Xining residents cheering on the riders. The 66km stage will be most likely to be a parade as the general classification has already been decided, however the battle for the green jersey points could continue as the TPT and the Kazakhstan teams could contest in the attempt to topple Shpilevskiy. Amore & Vita will also be a team to watch – as they are looking for another stage win for their star sprinter Yuriy Metlushenko. Shpilevskiy will be looking for a hat-trick of wins to complete the Tour of Qinghai Lake on a high-note.
