China: Tour of Qinghai Lake, Stage 4 Results and Photos - Ivan Stevic disqualified?

As predicted, the 120km stage from Xining to Qinghai Lake, ended with a big field sprint. Ivan Stevic was freelancing on his own in the peloton – without the help of his team mates as they have all been sick; the Russian National Team and the Amore & Vita Team all had very strong lead out trains going and looked to be a contest between Yuri and Boris. But it was Stevic’s day – he flew past the big trains about 10km/h faster and took the sensational win for his Serbian Team. It was a well deserved win despite being later disqualified for a dubious victory salute.

A day for the sprinters – Stevi explodes to stunning win (but seems to have been disqualified . . .)

Cyclingnewsasia talked to Stevic after the stage and he was visibly ecstatic with his win and was celebrating with an ice-cold beer. He relayed the lead-up to the finish for us:  “It was really chaotic out there leading to the finish, it was really hard to get a position – but managed to get to the front at the right moment.” He said.  “I focused on keeping myself on the left, with riders snaking around and I felt the momentum with 400m to go – I knew it was early when I went at 400m, but I knew that if got a couple of meters gap on the two trains it would be hard for the guys to catch me. It was my lucky moment, and I got it!”

Cyclingnewsasia interviewed the Serbian Team over dinner the previous night and it was then they revealed their plan for Stage four – to surprise the lead-out trains of Amore & Vita and the Russians. “It is our only chance of winning by getting an early jump on the two powerful trains and I plan to go with 400m meters or so to achieve our goal” said Stevic. He seemed so confident of pulling this off that it actually happened. cyclingnewsasia also predicted that Ivan Stevic would take the win if it came down to a field sprint.

Yuri Metlushenko  who finished 2nd just ahead of Russian Boris Shiplevsky had praise for Stevic, “We had our train going very well, my team was doing a superb job of putting me into position, but Ivan just came out of no-where to get a big jump on us. I managed to bring him back some, but the finish line was right there.” He said. “Ivan is going very fast and he did very well to do it on his own without the help of his team-mates”. Cyclingnewsasia is still waiting on information from race organisers, however official results show Stevi as being disqualified.

How it unfolded

Riders were again greeted by sunny warm conditions for the jaunt to Qinghai Lake, the largest inland salt water lake in China. The first 60kms featured a gradual climb on the free-way and the peloton stayed together till the hot sprint at the 30km mark. It was at this point three riders from Hong Kong, Slovenia and Amore & Vita escaped and established a good gap on the field. Since they were not GC threats, they were allowed to go. A Tabriz Petrochemical rider together with a SKS Shimano rider took off in pursuit and got within 30 seconds of the hard riding trio but could never close the gap. Eventually the time gap of nearly six minutes was too much for the Croatian National Team so they piled onto the front of the peloton and set the pace-making. The breakaway was eventually reabsorbed into the peloton when the race hit the shores of Qinghai Lake and this set up for the grand finale for the sprinters.

Tomorrow’s stage is another day for the sprinters as the race goes around Qinghai Lake to Bird Island. Stay tuned for the action!

Observations

Riders are still struggling to adapt to the altitude here in Qinghai with many reporting breathing issues and legs not getting enough oxygen. Riders are also still suffering with 'loose bowels' . . .

Riders were able to stay comfortable in the bunch climbing today

Cyclingnewsasia rode in the Giant Asia Team car today and witnessed several riders having to pull off on the side of the road and just have to do it there. After doing the business, some riders still made it back to the peloton while some did not. Riders are finding it hard to adjust to the conditions here in Qinghai. The food accounts for at least 50% of their problems – sometimes the food that is cooked is put out on the buffet 2hrs before the riders arrive for dinner and it is kept warm by Bunsen burners. Another culprit is likely to be the water that is drunk and also the conditions outside. For instance, the first day had shocking weather with riders saying the race was the dirtiest they had ever competed in – it was thick sludge that was coming up from the road and riders were constantly having to spit and also drain some fluids from the bottles to clean the nozzle before drinking.

Riding in team cars in the convoy, you get to see the race action unfold as the team managers communicate with their riders. Cyclingnewsasia will bring you more details on behind-the-scenes action.
