Stage 2 of Tour de Qinghai Lake saw Iranian Tabriz Cycling Team stamping their authority while Gregor Gazvoda (KTM) takes the stage win.
Another striking day in the pristine mountains of Qinghai
It was an exciting finale with five riders in the breakaway with a chase group containing all the contenders chasing hard. The breakaway consisted of four Iranians from the Tabriz Petrochemical Team and one Slovenian rider Gregor Gazvoda (KTM). The Iranians were in team time trial mode in their attempt to nab a clean sweep of the podium. However, the chase group containing Giant Asia's David McCann and Lobrikas Yellow jersey Radoslav Rogina were mobilizing the 12 strong to work well together on the long descent to the finish in pursuit of the breakaway.

It was very tense and exciting to witness the clinical organization of both the break and the chase group - it looked like the break might just hold them off, but they were caught just 200m from the end. The Slovenian rider who had been sitting on the powerful Iranian break opened his sprint 450 metres out when he saw the group from behind coming up fast - and he held on to take the win over Iranian Hossein Askari (TPT). David McCann secured third spot with his outstanding ride, displaying superior descending skills to claw back time.

The winner of Stage two, Gregor Gazvoda (KTM) was very pleased with his success, "I was in a fortunate position with the four Iranians in the break, I did not have to work with them and it was in their interest to work among themselves to go for the stage win: I just sat on and conserved my energy. When I saw the chase group coming up from behind, I started my sprint at the 450m mark, a long sprint I know but I had the fresh legs and that was the time to do it" he said.
Radoslav Rogina (LOB) retains his Yellow jersey with a 37 second lead over Gregor Gazvoda (KTM) and 44 seconds ahead of Jelly Belly's Kiel Reijnen. Due to brilliant work in the chase group from Rogina's two team-mates (Tomislav Danculovic and Hrvoje Miholjevic) and co-operation from David McCann (Giant Asia) they were able to catch the breakaway that threatened to steal the race away.

The stage began with a lightening fast 3.2km street circuit in Tongren in front of thousands and thousands spectators who lined the entire course. Racers completed six exciting laps with a breakaway of 10 riders leaping away to a handy lead. After the circuits, the peloton flew out of the town over the main bridge and onto a narrow country road that passed by a magnificent monastery. The peloton stayed largely intact all the way to the start of the 15km 900m climb, however as soon as the climb began the Iranian Tabriz-Petrochemical Team all amassed on the front and effectively blew the race to smithereens. One moment the peloton was there and cruising along, filling the width of the road and the next moment it seemed as if some grenade had exploded within their midst. There was no longer a peloton to speak off, blown riders were all over the road. The gruppetto was about 15 riders and growing. Up the front of the race, Iranian rider Ghader Mizabni Iranagh had powered away solo to have a two minute lead on the nearest chase group. At that point of the race, the lead group was not even 15 riders. It was only during the descent that the lead group swelled. However, three Iranians from the Tabriz team along with the eventual winner Gregor Gazvoda made the stunning bridge across to the solo leader (who had punctured half-way down). With four Iranian's in the break, it looked like the race was theirs but the Yellow jersey group had other plans!

Stage three is going to be a long tough one for the riders, featuring three mega-climbs that will shatter the field in the same way as it did during the one climb on Stage 2.

Cyclingnewsasia had the opportunity to ride in the Tabriz-Petrochemical Iranian team car during stage two. It was an exciting ride to witness the action as it unfolded and feel the tension and excitement that was palpable in the Iranian team car. The tension was building when their star climber Mizbani was powering away on the front and this turned to panic when he punctured on the wet descent - but they did a very slick fast wheel change that was under 30 seconds. When they noticed four riders coming up fast, they wondered who the hell they were - but quickly found out that it was in fact three of their team-mates making the bridge. The tension turned to excitement - the team manager was ecstatic and the Iranian in the back seat was giving high-fives. To witness the chase group and breakaway's action from the Iranian team car was extremely exciting and nail biting. In the end, they were caught but one of their riders still managed to get a 2nd placing.
