China: Preview of 2010 Tour Qinghai Lake |

Over the last eight years, the Tour of Qinghai Lake that takes place high on the Tibetan plateu surrounding China's largest inland freshwater lake, has grown to become one of the biggest and most prestigious UCI Tours on the Asian circuit. This year promises fast and tough racing and we tell you who will win...
It draws a highly competitive international field from all corners of the globe. The UCI has granted the Qinghai Tour as UCI 2.HC, which is at the highest level – only second to the Tour de France.
Beatuiful scenary in Qinghai This is due to the fact UCI take their globalisation strategy very seriously: “The Tour de Qinghai Lake has a vital strategic importance and is fundamental to our globalisation actions,” said UCI's Pat McQuaid. He also commented, “The UCI consider this event as vital and a very significant element for the general growth of cycling in China and Asia.”
The 2010 Edition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet with 21 teams and 147 riders participating and $300,000 USD in prize money. The Qinghai Lake Tour will kick off with an opening 72km criterium in Huzhu County that will no doubt be good for the sprinters before going straight into the mountains for stages one to four. Stages five to seven will give the sprinters another chance at glory before the penultimate stage, which is the last mountain stage before the flat Xining circuit race to conclude the Tour.

Essentially, the Tour course remains the same as the previous year, except for the addition of the Huzhu Criterium prologue and the addition of new stages seven and eight. The course for 2010 covers a total distance of 1241km and has an average elevation of 3000m. This altitude makes it the highest race in the world, and this is likely to pose altitude problems for many riders.
“You can only go full gas for 200m as the altitude effects take it out of you” commented Dutch Sprinter Tom Veelers (Shimano-Skil) who won stage nine last year.

The effects of high altitude will have many riders struggling to breathe as there is between 20-40% less oxygen than normal.
The team to watch will be the powerful Iranian team, Tabriz Petrochemical Cycling Team, and they are currently leading the UCI Asian classification with four of their riders in the top five. Mehadi Sohrabi leads the table with his 315 points over Giant Asia's David McCann who has 261 points. The 2009 defending champion from Kazakhstan, Andrey Mizurov, currently ninth overall on the UCI Asian ranking will have more than adequate support from his Tabriz Petrochemical team to launch his title defense.
Mizurov knows what is takes to win this race and will apply the experience he gained through winning in 2009 to try staying ahead of his competition.
The high altitude of the mountains poses a challenge
It appears the race could be again dominated by the Middle Eastern and Eastern Bloc teams, with most of the top 30 places likely to be filled by these teams. But do not discount strong challenges from Giant Asia, Team Type 1 and the Marco Polo Cycling Team. Surprising performances could come from New Zealand's Subway Avanti Team, the USA's Jelly Belly, and the two Chinese teams.

Team Type 1 is making their first appearance and they have a brilliant climbing sensation in Dutch rider, Thomas Rabou, who had a breakout ride, winning the Polka-dot jersey at the 2010 Tour of California. Their composition of riders look strong, including several past Pro-Tour riders. One of their biggest signings this year was Spanish all-rounder Javier Mejias Leal who transferred from Fuji Servetto. You can be sure that this Team Type 1 led by Michael Carter will have a big impact on the Qinghai Lakes Tour.

Amore and Vita is mostly made up of Ukranian riders. Some of their notable riders include specialist sprinter, Yuriy Metlushenko who won stage six in the Qinghai Tour last year and stage seven in the 2008 Edition. Their newest signing, Volodymyr Bileka, is an ex-ProTour rider, having previously ridden Postal Discovery and Silence-Lotto. But he was banned for two years for a failed doping test and just recently finished his suspension on May 31. This will be his first major Tour back and it will be interesting to see how he performs on his comeback trail.
Vitaliy Butts (Ukraine) is a Pro-Tour rider who normally rides for Lampre but is now riding for the Ukranian National Team for this tour. He turned Pro in 2009 and performed well at the Tour of Hainan last year, winning a stage and finishing third overall.
Subway Avanti Cycling consists entirely of Kiwi riders. They have two GC hopes: James Williamson has been riding well in the USA finishing his preparation off at altitude in Colarado; and Joe Cooper who has consistently performed well in New Zealand, look to be the riders with the best chance of collecting a stage win. The Team did perform well at the UCI Tour of Hainan, finishing second on general classification. Cyclingnewsasia asked Subway about their prospects for the Tour.
