It’s my first time in Indonesia, and though I’ve travelled all over S.E Asia and lived in Thailand and Hong Kong, it never ceases to surprise me how fantastically beautiful this part of the world is. I went on a training ride on the first and every turn revealed another mesmerizing vista of terraced tea fields, ornate wooden homes, lush, opulent jungle backed by jagged mountain ridges, all laced with the smells of ripe fruit, pollinating flowers and that sickly-sweet odour of the famous Indonesian clove cigarettes.

Smiling children played by the side of the road, workmen, people in the fields, families sat eating by makeshift barbecues, all were ready to wave, smile and shout encouragement to me.
It was truly one of the most memorable rides I’ve ever had.
Last night we had a parade around the town. Normally these events are an annoyance but we could see this was going to be different. There were literally thousands of people lining the streets. Someone said, “This can’t be for us...” disbelievingly. We were quickly ushered into similar rickshaws, apart from me - I ended up being pulled in the world’s ricketiest horse-drawn cart!

I hope he can ride better than he can dance .... Day One – Race Report Legs are pretty tired, but not too bad. Today the speed was decent, 42.9km/h for 110 kms, though we hit around 50km/h for long stretches as there was a strong tailwind for the first half of the route.
The organisers did a very professional job in controlling the event
The first 55km were relatively uneventful – then a group of 6 went clear on the first real hills. I watched them go, and was happy to see them get a gap as it meant we’d be able to rest a bit.
The stage win went to Hossein Alizadeh of the Iranian TPT Team, followed by Sascha Damrow of CCN, and Hari Fitrianto. My group came in 2.16 down.
Happy, cheering crowds were out everyday of the race, which really helps you push yourself harder
Same as ever, madness from the start. After a group of 9 riders got away though, we all calmed down and took it relatively easy until 30km to go.
The Iranian TPT team sat at the front trying to bring back the lead group which had a max lead of 2.20, but they weren’t doing a very good job of it. With 40 to go the lead hovered at about 1.30, and then the pace quickened. I felt good so put in an attack along with Alex Coutts of Giant but the peloton started to close on us. With no help we were soon caught again by the bunch.
The author had the chance to expore the countryside and enjoy the great ridiing, and stop for a self portrait. With 2km to go the bunch got ready for the sprint and I decided that I would try and see if I could get a good placing on the stage. With one km to go I headed up the outside but the speed was already at 56km/hr, and riders were swinging all over the road! I am willing to take a risk or two in a race but I am just don’t have the sprinter’s mentality - they are nuts! One look at the chaos at the front and I meekly stopped pedaling and drifted to the back of the group, just happy to be safe for another day.
Day Three – Ouch! What a ride. The course was a very nice one, a 6km or so loop through the center of Tulungagung with crowds lining the whole route, sometimes around 10 people deep. The pace was fast from the start though the attacks weren’t strong enough to get away.

There was a massive pile-up just before the line too, which saw the favorite for the stage Anuar Manan go down.
The overall was won by Hossein Alizadeh of the TPT team, followed by Sascha Damrow of CCN at 6 seconds, and Hari Fritrianto of the Jawa Timour team at 9 seconds.

I came in 66th, 7.25 down, the majority of that lost on the final stage. A great race, a great place, I hope to be back again next year.
