Daniel Carruthers (CS Racing) takes Round Three of the Shanghai Criterium series, winning a two-up sprint over Simon Cui (Specialized) in atrocious weather conditions.

I missed the start and spent the entire first lap just connecting with the back of the peloton. When I got there, there was a break of three up the road containing two CCN-Zipp riders and local pro-triathlete Freddie Croneborg (Chains Sprockets Bike Shop). They had swept up the sprint points on offer and looked like they were extending their lead over the peloton that took a while to kick into action. I had sensed the danger that the three riders posed and decided to try and bridge across to them. My first attempt was a failure, I only could get halfway across and riders from the peloton, especially Specialized Yellow jersey holder William Neijssen who was riding hard to stay on my wheel; but refused to pull through. I would sit up and other riders would slow down and fan out behind me, only coming pass me if I ceased pedaling. I did several surges during my first attempt and it was not till after I was well and truly caught and just half a lap later, a flurry of attacks flew up the road with riders hopeful of bridging across to the escapees that were always just out of reach. The flurry of movement caused the peloton to snap into pieces with many riders letting gaps go. I saw this happening and despite only recovering for less than half a lap, I made a ferocious leap to join the others that seemed they were fast disappearing and joining the party up the road; but one by one the riders lost steam and momentum. It was hard to do on the course that was riddled with treacherous crossings, like a minefield on every corner waiting to claim the rider that was skitterish through the turns. I had to slow down before each minefield and try to keep on the straightest possible line without breaking in order to emerge unscathed.

I was quite frustrated and tried to communicate that co-operation was needed. Once it was clear that they were not going to do the hard yards required, Freddie Croneborg and I started rotating on the front. It essentially became a two-man breakaway with four passengers along for the ride. With five laps to go, I had an idea and told my ally to make an attack to force the others to chase. I was getting worried that they would be too fresh and would take advantage of the situation after we had put in a lot of work to make the break stick. The tactic we now followed worked well and served to disrupt the break. It forced the others to chase while I got to ride for free on the back. Once they caught my ally, I attacked and they were again in pursuit with pro-triathlete Croneborg sitting on. We continued this pattern for a while and this succeeded in dropping one of the CCN-Zipp riders. With two laps to go, Simon Cui (Specialized) attacked with fresh legs to leap out to a significant gap. He had timed it well as the others were not responding and it was up to me to close the gap. I took off in desperate pursuit and when I checked behind, the others were well and truly dropped. The elastic had snapped at that point and it was just me versus the Specialized rider who was looking ominously strong. It took every ounce of my energy to bring him back and when I finally connected with his rear wheel, that’s where I stayed despite his attempts for me to go in front. I had done enough hard work and wanted the Specialized rider to make his own moves to which I would try and match. He tried several occasions to un-successfully shake me and one of his final attempts was an explosive effort out of the last corner that had me gapped, but I was able to claw back with about 350-400m to go. I then sat on his wheel, snaking left and right on the road – very much like a slow match sprint with an explosive finish. He opened his sprint about 200m to go and I managed to sneak past him in the final 100m to get the win by a bike length.
