Thailand: Tour of Friendship Stage 1 Daniel Carruthers wins!

Todays stage took riders 110 sweltering kilometers of 'friendship'. . . cyclingnewsasia diarist Daniel Carruthers puts on a bit of a show . . .

Riders constantly need water with stages taking place in 40 degree heat

It was a sweltering day with temperatures reaching in excess of 40 degrees but plenty of water was on-hand with the neutral support motorcycles zooming up next to the riders as soon as the hand went up. The open category consists of a small field but the opening one hour had the riders humming along at 45km/h average speed, however when the riders tried to over-take the 40 plus category, the 40 plus men swarmed on us like wasps and would not let us go despite several attempts to break free.

Riders rolling along the Thailand roads in the heat

After several attempts myself to try and get away (but unsuccessful), I cruised along at the back of the peloton waiting for another chance to go. I planned to attack after the next big surge; the 40 plus men seemed to be surging to 45 plus kilometres per hour and then crawling along at 33-35km/h. There was a big surge that had speeds reaching over 50km/h and when there was a lull in the pace, I took advantage of the momentum and leapt out to a sizable gap. About eight riders from my category were able to respond and came with me. We quickly put the peloton out of sight and it was fortunate that none of the 40 plus men made it across as this would have cause them to chase again.

We lapped it out together, working well for 20kms but riders were tiring and started missing turns or pulling through weakly. We were doing between 35-40km/h for the final 30 minutes. I was getting a bit anxious to keep the pace up and kept jumping away to force them to chase back.

Daniel Carruthers (Champion System) waiting for the right move

Since there was heavy rainfall the previous night, the climbing sections through the Khao Yai National Park was cancelled and the finish was held on a slight uphill drag. At the 3km to go sign, riders in the break started looking at each other and I just waited till someone made the first move. A rider from Malaysia made the first significant jump at the 1km to go sign and was surging away. I waited a few seconds longer and jumped when the Laos Junior National team rider reacted to the Malaysian rider. I followed closely and opened my final blast to the line at about 200m to go, surging past both riders and went on to win by a couple of bike lengths.  The Malaysian held on for second ahead of the Laos rider.

Tomorrow's stage is 160km and features some short sharp climbs but the terrain is mostly rolling.
