As the Tour de France approaches we know you are all wondering who has good form and who ate too many pies in the off season - who will be fast in June?
Switerland:
Frank Schleck time trialled his way to a surprise overall victory in the Tour de Suisse last weekend  as overnight leader Robert Gesnik dramatically lost the lead in the 27km time trial around Liestal. Most people thought that Gesnik would hold onto his lead after the short time trial but he instead lost 2m18s in the individual test to drop from 1st overall to 5th overall elevating Frank Schleck into 1st, a very solid Lance Armstrong (foreshadowing?) into 2nd and Jakob Fulsgang into 3rd . . .

Frank Schleck wasn't the only surprised Saxo Bank man yesterday though as his teammate and heavy favourite for the time trial, Fabian Cancellara was also surprised - but in a bad way when he lost the time trial to a flying Tony Martin.

Final Time Trial Results (Liestal)

1 Tony Martin (HTC - Columbia) 32'21
2 Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) 0'17
3 David Zabriskie (Garmin - Transitions) 0'29
4 Gustav Erik Larsson (Saxo Bank) 0'48
5 Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack)
6 Andreas Klöden (RadioShack) 0'52
7 Jakob Fuglsang (Saxo Bank)
8 Maxime Monfort (HTC - Columbia) 0'57
9 Wouter Poels (Vacansoleil) 1'02
10 Stijn Devolder (Quick Step) 1'07
11 Lance Armstrong (RadioShack) 1'09

Final General Classification:

• 1. Fränk Schleck (Saxo Bank)
• 2. Lance Armstrong (RadioShack), at 0:12
• 3. Jakob Fuglsang (Saxo Bank), at 0:18
• 4. Steve Morabito (BMC), at 0:24
• 5. Robert Gesink (Rabobank), at 0:27
• 6. Tony Martin (HTC-Columbia), at 0:28
• 7. Rigoberto Uran (Caisse d’Epargne), at 0:33
• 8. Andreas Klöden (RadioShack), at 0:49
• 9. Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver (Katusha), at 1:09
• 10. Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack), at 1:14

Team Gossip: Milram's pin up boy sprinter, Gerald Ciolek has, according to some sources signed for Belgian team Omega Pharma-Lotto for the 2011 season. This of course is terrible news for the German Milram team who are still desperately searching for a replacement sponsor for next year as Milram will not be renewing as title sponsor for 2011.

One of those French teams losing their sponsor, Bbox Bouygues Telecom is apparently very close to signing a new sponsor, twith General Manager Jean-René Bernadeau stating in the press this week that he should be making an announcement on the team's future directly after the Tour de France. Bernadeau went on to state that he was very optimistic that the team will not only continue next year but do so with an increased budget.

Meanwhile back at the Omega Pharma-Lotto camp they are making no secret of the fact that they want a sprinter, supposedly now offering Andre Greipel a lucrative contract. Greipel is annoyed at having to play second fiddle behind Mark Cavendish and has already been told he will ride in this years Tour de France

UCI: After all the controversy surrounding the 'Cancellara motor in the frame' affair the UCI have made an announcement that ALL bikes at the Tour de France will be examined for the so called 'mechanical doping' before being allowed to be used in the race.

All bikes will be scanned prior to use, but the way in which it will be done is for the moment, a secret. With this new scan the UCI hopes to finish once and for all any rumours going about artificial performances at the Tour - mechanically artificially enhanced anyway!

UCI: The International Cycling Union (UCI) has approved disc brakes for competition in the 2010-’11 cyclo-cross race season. The ban was lifted via a newly issued document entitled, ‘Rule Amendments for Title 1,’ on Friday morning.

“I didn’t think that one was going to go through with the UCI,” said Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com team director, Stu Thorne. “I had heard about all the changes long ago… the biggest thing for us is the tyre width — but the brake thing kind of caught me off guard.”

The same document also newly restricts tires used in UCI regulated competition to 33mm at their widest part and reiterates the ban on spikes and studs. The basis for the rule change is to make the sport more approachable, equipment wise, to juniors. Thorne explained, in Belgium the top juniors believed they needed to mirror the iconic rider’s equipment quiver to be competitive, subsequently building a huge barrier to entry, especially on a developmental level.

Canada: The US race,Nature Valley, was won by Rory Sutherland  and they even had something not seen in other big races - a stage cancelled mid stage (stage 3) due to a tornado! The cancelling of the stage caused some problems though as with race radios banned from the peloton, communication was difficult between the directors and riders and the process of informing all the riders was apparently a confusing and lengthy process.

After surviving the hurricane scare and the constant attacks during the course of the week, Stage 1's time trial winner Scott Zwizanski (Kelly Benefits) still led the race going into the final Stage 6 criterium of just 40km around Stillwater. With 40km of racing, no time bonuses on offer and a lead of 3 seconds you could be forgiven for thinking that Zwizanski would be relatively safe. 20 laps of a circuit that included a climb with pitches at 18% meant that Sutherland and the other GC contenders had many opportunities to attack and it was on the 2nd last lap where Sutherland made his move. After some excellent team work by his United Healthcare team Sutherland powered away up the climb to not only win the stage but also the overall by 6s from the dejected Zwizanski.

Final General Classification

1. Rory Sutherland United Healthcare P/b Maxxis in 7:28:54
2. Scott Zwizanski Kelly Benefit Strategies at 6s
3. David Veilleux Kelly Benefit Strategies at 20
4. Luis Romero Amaran Jamis/Sutter Home P/b Colavita at 28
5. Bernard van Ulden Jelly Belly P/b Kenda at 38
