Hong Kong: Volvo AA XC Mtb Series from Action Asia

A charging Cheng Chak Shing chased and chastised the bunch from behind to bolster his benefit in the series leadies lead in the Volvo AA XC Mtb series.

Hong Kong: - BMC Fox Racing Shox rider Cheng Chak Shing took the series lead by pacing himself during the first 12km lap at Chi Ma Wan, Lantau, putting the hammer down on the final lap to win the 24km Volvo AA XC mountain bike race Sunday.

“It was fast paced as we were all riding hard with Pierre in front, Cosmo not far behind. I was unfamiliar with the course so didn’t want to push hard on the first lap. Strategy was to push a lot harder on the 2nd lap uphill, got by Pierre after Lung Mei and focused on not making mistakes or puncturing till the end. I see some of the riders using full suspension today, but was quite happy with my BMC hardtail as think it's the way to go on Chi Ma Wan, especially with the uphill sections”, said Axis Cycling Club member Cheng Chak Shing finishing first overall in 1 hour 42 minutes and 57 seconds who collected $500 cash from Fox racing and a host of prizes from Sram & Bell.

Just over 3 minutes behind, Chiru endurance bike team rider Pierre Arnaud Le Magnan came screaming thru the finish line. “Started very quick and new I would catch the others in the technical section. Tried to open a gap, but it didn’t happen as Cheng had more juice left in the tank. Started to overheat on the 2nd lap so knew I was on the limit. Cheng really deserved to win today so well done to him. Really happy with the Chiru bike as definitely cut a minute or two off my time” said 2nd place overall winner Le Magnan finishing in 1 hour 46 minutes 02 seconds.

Another 33 seconds later Chiru endurance rider Cosmo Richards cruised thru with a big grin. “Awesome race, as technical course suits me and love Chi Ma Wan. I knew the young guys would go fast and just let them go at the beginning, with strategy going hard on the 2nd lap. Being out injured last month and today the temperature getting really hot, I just did my best” said 3rd place overall Richards finishing in 1 hour 46 minutes 35 seconds.

Taking home $500 cash from Fox racing and lots of Sram and Bell prizes in the women’s category Dennex Lui finished first. “Wow. Hot. Not easy in this weather as think it was 30 degrees. Just glad to finish” said overall women winner Lui finishing in 2 hours 49 minutes 22 seconds.

“Chi Ma Wan’s more difficult than Tai Lam Chung and only practiced 2x here. The first lap I did slow and didn’t have any electrolyte tablets and just water. Felt like vomiting until I finally took a salt tablet that helped make sure I didn’t cramp and finish” said second place Women’s overall champion Nerissa Tong finishing in 3 hours 13 minutes 58 seconds.

Participants were given friendly permission from the Agriculture & Fisheries Department to use a closed section of Chi Ma Wan near Shap Long Kau Tsuen, greatly appreciated by the mountain bike community as shows AFCD is warming up to the constant lobbying for the opening of more bike trails in Hong Kong.

The 12km cross country mountain bike course loop starts at Shap Long Kau Tsuen using a 2km single track trail to the village of Shap Long Chung Hau. A short 1km road ride to the correctional institute before entering the CMW reservoir heading towards Lung Mei. The single-track trail takes them on a contour ride clockwise passing the sea ranch (Yi Long) turn and Mong Tung Wan before arriving back at Shap Long Kau Tsuen.

There was a surprise entry in the field with Bob Smith making a trip all the way from Afghanistan the former head of the Hong Kong Mountain Bike Association. “Glad to be back in HK for a short visit, but work is calling back in Afghanistan. It’s so cool just too see so many biking buddies and former friends. Oh I miss all of you dearly,” said Smith.
