China: Huangshan International Mountain Bike Race by Nordic Ways Results and Photos

China: Welcome to Anhui Province for the 2010 Nordic Ways Huangshan Mountain Bike Festival. Read on for photos, our story and the full results!

"This was a wicked course with a decent amount of single track to satisfy the discerning mountain biker and yet not too difficult for beginners. It has to be the most picturesque mountain bike course I have ever done, in terms of the combination of old Chinese buildings, nature and farm-land.  I have raced a few icon mountain bike races in New Zealand, and I would rank this event to be up there . . . Holy Brother's Feng Kuanjie dominates Huangshan

Feng Kuanjie showed his class winning the men's 40km race ahead of a strong domestic and international field with a super quick time of 1hr 34mins. It was expected that the battle would be fought tightly with Aussie Piers Touzel (Champion System Adventure) but it did not eventuate as Touzel was dropped on the 4km road climb.

The mens 40km start was furious - Holy Brother cyclists looking strong as was cyclingnewsasia diarist Daniel Carruthers (87). Photo© Nordic Ways

Second placed rider was Wang Lei (Holy Brother) who finished just in front of a fast closing Liu Min (Champion System) in third place. On the Ladies side racing was hot with Li Xuemei and Wang Xueli (both Guangdong PinLu Club) and Lv Taotao from Champion System placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd. For the Mens 20km race, Qi Yun (Wuxian China Club) took the first step on the podium followed closely by his compatriot Zheng Qi (Wuxian China Club) and Chen Long from Wuxi.

How it unfolded:

187 riders lined up on a chilly but clear morning at the historic Hongcun Village site where Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon was shot. The start was frantic and was five minutes ahead of schedule, which took some riders by surprise. It was a stampede over 500m with riders jostling for prime position going into the narrow village cobblestones and single track; being in the top 20 was the key to maintaining a good position once it was single file. All the favorites were sitting in the top 10, including Piers Touzel in 4th position and Feng Kuan Jie leading the way.

Once riders hit the first of the technical sections, gaps started opening up and the front eight riders slipped away with others getting caught behind the log-jam on the single track that twisted through rice fields and tea plots. Essentially the front runners had split into two groups by the time the first section was over and the 4km road climb began. It was on this climb that the top five riders set a blistering pace that had previous Huangshan Champion, Touzel struggling to keep up.

Touzel commented "The Chinese riders, especially Feng Kuanjie, have improved alot and my own fitness is not as good as last year. I was able to keep them in sight at times, but they were fearless on the downhills and gradually I lost more time. The competition this year has stepped up another level with some of the best Chinese riders coming to battle it out"

After the major road climb was completed, the real mountain bike racing was resumed, racing over some brilliant single track through bamboo forests, rice plantations, and picturesque villages. The single track on offer at times was challenging enough for the top riders with the sharp switch-backs, numerous jagged rocks, small stream crossings and drop-offs. The endless stream of racers zipping through the villages and farm-land left a number of peasants looking a little bewildered, though a number of them especially the younger ones were heard chanting in Chinese "Jiayou Jiayou" (go go).

A very vocal crowd of spectators were gathered tightly around the Hongcun Village and the small lake area as the mud splattered riders crossed the finish-line to complete another epic year of Huangshan Mountain Bike racing put on by Nordic Ways, 361 Degrees, CCTV 5 and Trek.

Comments from the author:

This was my first mountain bike race in several years and I raced on a borrowed Avanti Competitor with shoes that were more suited to street walking! I had a "running" start as I was not even mounted on the bike when the gun went off for the mass start. The start was 5 minutes too early and took me by surprise, at the time I had a gel in my hand and a bottle in the other. I basically had to whip everything away and push the bike along to a running start to stay near the front, by this time I had lost my front row position and was at least 60 riders back! However, I managed to sprint up into the top 20 but even this was not enough (prior knowledge of the course would have helped!) as it was on narrow road and single track after 500m, which made it difficult for passing riders. I think I was around the top 20-25 riders and tried to pass when I could. By the time it hit the real technical single track stuff, sharp rises and banks to get over and twisty curvy bits strewn with rocks and mushy/wet areas. Momentum was key to getting over without dismounting. One Holy Brother rider had tried to pass me in a section where there was no room for doing such a maneuver, he ended up crashing down a small bank and over the handle-bars!

Unfortunately, a number of riders got bogged down in front of me and the front group managed to gap away from the rest of us. Just doing the first part of the single-track already had me red-lining and when I started the road climb I was not able to reclaim lost ground to the leaders. However, I managed to climb ok to be with the second group - somewhere in the top 20.

As the race progressed, my position stayed basically the same. On the second lap, I caught up with several riders including Gao from CS Racing, but I was dropped by them on the road climb. Half way up this climb, I was caught by an Anhui rider who tried to motor past me and drop me; but I would have none of this and jumped onto his wheel to match him for the rest of the road climb. He started pulling away from me on the gravel section of the climb, but I pulled him back again on the decent and we had caught up with Gao. I was getting into the flow of things on the down-hills and carving up the fast open sections of the single-track when I struggled up the last short climb with some minor cramp. I survived and made my last power push to the line, in a bid to catch the Anhui rider and also Gao (which I could see about 30 seconds up). I caught the Anhui rider about 1.5km from the finish and it was a sprint from there for me, finishing 15 seconds ahead with a reasonable time of 1hr 43, but a full nine minutes behind a flying Feng Kuanjie.

This was a wicked course with a decent amount of single track to satisfy the discerning mountain biker and yet not too difficult for beginners. It has to be the most picturesque mountain bike course I have ever done, in terms of the combination of old Chinese buildings, nature and farm-land. I have raced a few icon mountain bike races in New Zealand, and I would rank this event to be up there (maybe not for absolute beauty though!). I envisage that this event will continue to grow in popularity as more riders from both China and internationally learn about it. As the event grows bigger, it would make sense to hold the 20km event after the 40km main event has finished, so that the lead riders do not get slowed by the tail-end of the 20km race.
