We ride in Asia a lot. One of our favourite riding destinations in Asia has to be Taiwan. Recently, we got a chance to chat with a bikeshop owner in Taichung - Mr. Tim Kao from ModusVelo and he talked with us about his bikeshop and what he thinks of cycling in general in Taiwan - the kingdom of bicycles in Asia. Let's hear him out...
CNA: What’s the name of your bike shop, and where are you located? Tim: We're called ModusVelo. Our store can be found at 492 Yumen Road in Xitun District of Taichung, very close to the popular Metropolitan Park.

CNA: When was your bike shop founded? Tim: It started in 2006 as an online shop. The current shop in Taichung was opened in Aug. 2009
Tim: We focus on serving the road biking community in Taichung, so most of our stuff is RB related, featuring brands like Cinelli, De Marchi, Waterford, Colnago, Time, SRM, etc. We also like single-speed stuff and carry Chrome messenger bags.

CNA: What’s your business philosophy? Tim: Our shop motto is “Train hard. Go fast. Live well.” Because riding has been so good to us, we believe ModusVelo should strive to help our clients incorporate riding into their lives also.
Tim: On the retail side it’s really in a state of flux. The market is immature and the overall biking culture rather shallow. Most retailers still compete on prices, and the consumers have not developed enough sophistication to support a critical mass of quality bike shops.

CNA: What’s unique about your bike shop? Tim: We ride. We train. We race. We practice what we preach. That makes us unique in Taiwan. We are knowledgeable about the hardware because we actually use it ourselves and give it a good thrashing before we reccommend it to our customers. More importantly, we can teach our clients how to ride. For example, we are the only shop in Taiwan with the knowledge and expertise to offer clients power-based training services.
Tim: As mentioned before, we are heavily invested in road bikes. That’s where our passion is. That’s where our knowledge and skill sets are.

Tim: It’s a mix really. The core tend to be guys in their 30s-40s with at least college degrees. We’d love to put more women on our road bikes though.

CNA: Do you have any souvenir or celebrity’s jersey in your shop that you could share with us? Tim: No. And you will not find stickers or product posters in our shops either.
CNA: I see, so you seem to have a philosophy of being unbiased by marketing and hero's. That's cool. So we heard that your shop also has a cycling team called Cinelli Ritchey. Can you tell us something about your team? Tim: Team Cinelli Ritchey started in 2009. It’s a very small elite-level amateur team. Currently it has four members – three full-time working professionals (not PRO as in pro riders:) and one student. For such a small team we get top-line support from our sponsors – TCR is the only team in Taiwan that gets top-of-the-line frames from a major Italian manufacturer. (We are riding Cinelli Stratos this year.) We get this high level of support not because we win a bunch of races necessarily, but because we have been able to present our sponsors well. Tim: We aim to always have better staff through training and education. Develop a more comprehensive training service package for our clients. Develop a more women-friendly service environment.
