Your new chain rings being machined . . .

 

CNA: Are there any products or innovations that you are particularly proud of?


Inigo Gisbert: Well, there are so many products we’ve designed... It’s hard to say. But, the FSA compact handlebar, for example, this was hard to get the dimensions just right, and after we launched that it was very popular, and you can see that all our competitors are copying that shape. A lot of cyclists said they didn’t use the drops because the drop was too low, so we changed that. Also with the integrated shifters - since Shimano brought in integrated shifters, no-one had re-designed the bars to accommodate for the difference in reach between bar and shifter.

The adjustable reach aerobars too, I am happy with.

Also the K-Force Light 386 Mountain Bike Crankset, we got an award at the EuroBike show for that last year, and an IF Material Award this year. That has a new design concept, a 2 arm spider only, instead of 4.

CNA: As a cyclist yourself you know what works and what doesn’t. Is that the most important point? I mean, if it doesn’t work, no-one will buy it.

Inigo Gisbert:
Well yes, but cyclists are people too, they want something that looks good! If it works but doesn’t look good, maybe still no one will buy it!

CNA: There are so many options these days.

Inigo Gisbert: Yes, there is so much competition these days that we always have to consider the graphics, the shapes, the specifications. We pay attention to the trends too, for example, white handlebars - the customers want them, so we do them. One part of this brand’s philosophy is  - We Can Do It For You. You can see that in our headsets. We have the leading range of headsets in the market. If a customer comes with a different design, we develop it for them.

CNA: The difference between using carbon and metals . . . Which do you prefer?

Inigo Gisbert: It’s not so much a question of prefer . . . each material has its own properties. For some applications one material may be more suitable than another. But basically, we can make a good product in any material.

But for example a seatpost, carbon is actually an excellent material, especially for a round tube. It’s easy to control, the layup, the thickness and the stiffness, we can control  both the inner and outer diameter pretty well. For the performance we can control that too, for example the stiffness - aluminium is stiffer maybe, but carbon is still very still, more compliant and very light.

Also for handlebars, especially for MTBs, carbon is very good, as it flexes a little and dampens the shock. On a 5 hour road ride too, carbon is more forgiving.

CNA: What about? A lot of people, me included, prefer metal.

 

Have you ever wondered how ofter Chain rings should be replaced? These guys could tell you pretty quick . . .


Inigo Gisbert: For stems, because of the complexity of the shape, aluminium is a more straightforward material to use. But we do make a really nice carbon stem, but to get there takes a lot more work, a lot of thought goes into it. The carbon is oversized so stiffer than the aluminium stems, but heavier. Some sprinters like these very strong stems, so weight is no issue. But yes aluminium is easier to work with.

For cranks, our carbon cranks have a really low weight, but the effort to make a really really good carbon crank, it’s a lot! It’s such a complex shape, it takes a lot of time in development and testing, but we are very happy with our carbon cranks. It’s worth the effort to get there.

CNA: Your carbon cranks are all carbon?

Inigo Gisbert: Some other companies use an older technology, they mix materials there. And there are problems in that, as different materials have different properties. We use the latest technology - no foam inserts or alloy at all, which is better for the carbon fibre, not to mix it. Our FSA crank is hollow but has an I-Beam in the middle to reinforce it, and it’s all carbon. Super stiff and super light.

CNA: What about the current obsession with ultra-lightweight wheels?

Inigo Gisbert: You have to think about the application. For a strong rider, lots of power, of course you want a light bike but you want a strong bike. But for other guys, less power, sure, they can ride super lightweight but they don’t sprint as hard, so they don’t notice that difference in stiffness. But our aim is of course to get both, light and strong.
