I think it’s been a good time sitting on a couch watching tele, enjoying the dramatic crashing of the titan teams of Italy, France, Brazil, and Argentina in the World Cup and the madness and crashing in the 2nd and 3rd stage of Tour de France in Holland and Belgium as a fan and spectator.

 

PART 1

For me , it’s a different story. I’ve been in full racing mode in Europe for 1 and a half months now. Without much training and preparation coming into this block of 4 months of straight racing isn’t fun at all. Before this, starting on the 1st of June, I had to take 2 weeks off my bike for having really bad form after abandoning in the cruel Tour de Korea, then I went off for a family trip vacation to America. With only having 2 weeks of small training rides, I headed to Europe to dream big, planning to race in the highest ranked races over here in Belgium, the pro kermesses and UCI category races.

 

Yes, it’s my 6th year here in Europe. I can now call myself a half Dutch Limburgers, where I lived in Geleen, in the heart of Amstel Gold race course. I am here for 2-5 months every time I visit as a cyclist - my dream is to be a full time pro in the future.

 

I started with 2 local kermesse races before getting into a UCI 2.2 ranked, 4 day stage race in France. It was a hard time, and I had to abandon this tour on the 1st stage - I was lacking racing condition and fitness. Driving home alone for 350km after that race made me realize how hard it was to dream big and fall hard . . . after less than 2 weeks of real discipline training and local kermesse racing, I was ready and waiting to race in the big league Pro Kermesses and UCI 1.2 races in Belgium.

 

Loh makes friends with a dangerous gang in Qinghai Lake. Reports say he was lucky to escape with his life ;)


Lining up in races with ProTour, pro continental & continental teams doesn’t make a race look easier as they come in with a full serious setup:

  • Team car with 5-7 bikes on the racks with 4-5 pair of spare wheel in and out
  • Team bus
  • Mechanic
  • Souigner
  • Masseur
  • Families and girl friends . .

My first real test was the Ledde Pro Kermesse. I did OK until I had to let go from the peloton with 3 laps to race; It seems I still need a few more races, but I was definitelyl satisfied with the effort I put in.


2 days after, I raced Ruddervoorde Pro Kermesse. The way to survive in Belgium races is to race on the front - eventually, my intension to ride in this space, so I won’t get dropped from riding in the back of the peleton. I needed to stay in the front group 30 riders. I don’t really know what to expect while in a break with the pros, I did my part riding on the front and when they went for it in the last 5 laps, the break exploded into pieces . . . I had to settle back to the peloton and finished the race.

4 days later, I raced in a local kermesse in Jeuk, where I was still curious about the last day of racing and whether I would have some form left over. Straight from the 2nd lap, I was in a 13 man break. Everyone seems to be a bit strange, normally it's about getting shouted at, swearing, missing turns, and sudden accelerations. This time, they rolled and worked well among all riders. With two laps to the finish, I was In a split with only 3 other riders. A few more guys bridged over on the last lap, attacked here and there, and I had a few tries on my own - hoping for luck on the last lap - It didn’t work out, but I finished 9th and competed in the finale (so it wasn't that bad either).
