Tour de France: Stage 18, Cavendish is the Fastest and Thor loses the Green

Britain's Mark Cavendish claimed his 14th career success on the Tour de France after coasting to victory in a bunch finish at the end of the 18th stage from Salies-de-Bearn to Bordeaux.

Alberto Contador retained his eight-second overall lead on Andy Schleck a day ahead of the final time trial over 52km that will decide whether the Spaniard wins the yellow jersey for the third time.

Hollywood stars Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise, welcomed Contador after they watched the action all day

And the Spaniard appeared sure of his eventual triumph when he gave signed yellow jersey gifts to the two actors. "Here is a yellow jersey, which I hope to win on Sunday," the Spaniard said.

Need motivation to win, you get a kiss from Miss Diaz

Schleck meanwhile is hoping to create his own drama Saturday and cause what would be the biggest upset on the race since American Greg LeMond beat France's Laurent Fignon by eight seconds in 1989.

"It's all or nothing," said the Luxemburger, who trailed in 1min 45sec behind Contador in the final time trial of last year's race. "I'm going out there with no pressure. I've got nothing to lose."

Mark Cavendish proves he the fastest man on 2 wheels

Cavendish sealed his reputation as the race's most successful sprinter in decades with a master class to his rivals on one of the last stages likely to finish in a bunch sprint.

The HTC-Columbia rider has been missing lead-out man Mark Renshaw since the Australian's exclusion from the race last week but that proved no handicap as Cavendish borrowed Alessandro Petacchi's wheel instead to finish the 198km stage with room to spare.

"When Alessandro went with 275 (metres) to go I thought he had the jump on me, so I was pretty happy that I was able to get the jump on him" said Cavendish. "He went on the left and I came around him on the right," added the Isle of Man rider, who played down the ease with which he won the stage. "It doesn't matter whether you win by a lot or five bike lengths. A win's a win."

Lampre rider Petacchi finished third behind Kiwi Julian Dean, of Garmin-Transitions, but did enough to take back the green jersey for the sprinters' points competition from Norwegian Thor Hushovd.

Cervelo sprinter Hushovd was well placed in the final kilometre but lost ground when two-stage winner Petacchi veered to the left of the road, creating a new echelon which an alert Cavendish did well to follow.

Cavendish wins again

Cavendish then powered past Petacchi with relative ease, and had time to look back at his rivals three times before crossing the finish line in victory, his fourth this year and 14th in four participations.

Having taken 35 points for the win to move just 16 points shy of Petacchi and six behind Hushovd, Cavendish is now back in contention for the points competition's green jersey, an objective he had to shelve after a disastrous first week of racing.

The sprinters are expected to be back in action on Sunday when the race finishes on the Champs Elysees in Paris, where Cavendish won his sixth stage of last year's edition.

Although not talking up his chances, he looks odds-on to pip the Italian to the prize. "I've got to try and win on the Champs Elysees, whatever the situation," added Cavendish.

Petacchi, who said he has been suffering from a chest infection in recent days that has required antibiotics, knows he faces a tough fight. "I still have to pick up points in the final sprint," said the Italian.

For Hushovd, who won stage three to Arenberg but who has been under par in the bunch sprints, the green jersey is already forgotten. "That's it, the green jersey is over for me," said Hushovd. "I just haven't been good enough in the sprints."

Stage 19: Bordeaux — Pauillac 52 km Time Trial

The second last day is a long  flat time trial, 52 kilometers with no climbs.  It is the last chance to win the Tour, today we learn who will wear Yellow in Paris. Only eight seconds separate Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck, but Contador has always ridden better against the watch. Meanwhile, Denis Menchov will chase Samuel Sánchez for the final podium step. Sánchez has 30 seconds advantage over the Russian.

Bradley Wiggins said he is targeting this stage to save face for Team Sky.  Tony Martin beat World Champion Fabian Cancellara in the final time trial at the Tour de Suisse and Mick Rodgers was three time world champion has also underperformed this year.

All very fast men but with yellow on his back Contador will win this stage
