Tour de France: Stage 8, Evans in yellow as Schleck wins stage

Australian Cadel Evans took possession of the race leader's yellow jersey after the Tour de France's eighth stage won by Luxembourg's Andy Schleck. Alberto Contador's Astana team put the screws to the Tour de France today, and Lance Armstrong's historic run of luck finally ran out.

It wasn't fun watching Lances' Tour fall apart - seems he didn't enjoy it either . . .

The American crashed twice and lost all hope of a podium place in the process and crossed the line 11:45 adrift of Schleck's pace. Armstrong now stands 39th in the overall standings, 13:26 off Evans.

Sanchez tried to pull off another sprint in the same style as his win in Beijing - 'not quite' said Andy Schlek . . .

Schleck, the Saxo Bank rider who finished second behind Spaniard Alberto Contador in last year's Tour, out-sprinted Samuel Sanchez for the stage win after the duo broke free one kilometre from the summit finish line.

World champion Evans of BMC and reigning champion Contador (Astana) finished in a group of nine riders 10 seconds later.

He says it's over, but do you really believe him?

"My Tour is over," said Armstrong. "But I will stay in the race. I will enjoy it, I'll try and take some pleasure out of it, to support the team. I'm not complaining." "I've had a bad day, a very bad day. At the start, it was going okay, I felt strong. "It's already hard to come back, hard on the body."

Evans, who was left with scrapes after a fall only a few kilometres into the stage, said it was too windy and not steep enough for him to launch an attack.

The second category one climb of the race was the 14km ascension to the summit finish line at Morzine-Avoriaz. And with Armstrong trailing, the group of favourites did not think twice about pressing ahead.

The last remnant from an earlier five-man breakaway, Frenchman Amael Moinard, was caught by Contador's group a little over six kilometres from the summit. And from that point on Astana kept pushing to drop as many rivals as they could.

Wiggins showed small cracks but seemed to hold it together

Britain's Bradley Wiggins, who finished fourth overall last year, had looked strong for most of the last climb but began slipping back and eventually the elastic snapped with just over four kilometres remaining.

Would you like a medal, or a chest to pin it on? Andy was fast . . .

After finishing in 19th place, he admitted: "I don't mind admitting I just wasn't good enough today. I did my best, that's all you can do in that situation.

"There came a point I couldn't afford to keep hanging on to that group."

A freshly shaved Cadel gets a kiss

Armstrong's setback will give a huge morale boost to all the remaining yellow jersey contenders, but mostly Contador, Schleck and Evans.

Monday is the race's first rest day, while Tuesday's eighth stage from Morzine to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne is arguably the hardest in the Alps.

It features five climbs, including four mountain passes, for a total of 66.1km of racing uphill - 25.5km of which will be over the Col de la Madeleine whose summit is 32km from the downhill finish line.

Tomorrow – Rest Day, but the next day, is another big one in the mountains.

Stay tuned for our rest day analysis, more rider comments  and preview of the rest of the race.
