Italian Alessandro Petacchi rolled back the years for the second time in the Tour de France to claim his second stage win from a bunch sprint.

Stage 5 took place on a very flat course - HTC Columbia controls the front

After the chaos, carnage, and controversy of the last two stages, it's safe to say that the entire Tour de France peloton was looking forward to the relatively safe and calm 153 km stage from Cambrai to Reims in France. The overwhelming prediction was a bunch sprint, and that’s what we got.

As usual a breakaway went early inside the first 5 kilometers without too much fuss, and spent the next 140 kilometers getting publicity for their teams until 15 km to the finish. HTC-Columbia began to set a strong pace at the front with help from Cadel Evan’s BMC team. At 4 km mark, the break was caught and HTC-Columbia turned up the pace for sprinter Mark Cavendish.

Inside 2k to go it looked like a three horse race: Petacchi, Cavendish, and Hushovd, who were all well placed with good team support.

Then it all fell apart . . .

Petacchi leapt from fourth wheel and left everyone in his wake with a powerful jump. Robbie McEwen was the first to come close to his wheel, but he has no answer for Petacchi. Cavendish was left gasping as the sprint rode right by him. He gave it a big effort, but sat up in the final meters - his misery continues . . .

Unbelievable. Alessandro Petacchi came in for his second bunch sprint victory at this year's Tour de France, belying his 36 years. Petacchi's sixth career Tour stage was also the 165th win of his career.

"I'm not like a little old man, as some have said. This win is really important for me and for the team," said Petacchi, who played down claims he only won the opening stage because a crash took out many rivals. "I've come here to win stages and I've shown twice that I'm not here to make up the numbers. "In the over 200 sprints I've done I've learned a thing or two. But today I have to say thanks to my team, they really anticipated things despite the fact they don't have a lot of experience trying to set up sprints."
