Rollers have started to gain populariry, and we've received a number of emails from you; our readers on what type of rollers to buy, and how to ride these tricky things called 'rollers'. Is it easy? Or is it as hard as it looks? We got together with our friends at Shimano to put together a bit of a photo lesson to assist you in your learning step by step . . .

Rollers are a very handy tool to assist with your indoor training regime when you aren't able to get outside due to bad weather, traffic etc. Another positive aspect of rollers are that they can greatly assist your sense of balance, helping you to better control your body and bike. Many cyclists have emailed us complaining that rollers aren't user-friendly; we have even received some emails telling us that rollers should be banned as they are 'extremely dangerous'. We set out to dispel the myths and offer some assistance on how to ride rollers safely, and efficiently. Read on for our step-by-step guide to get you rolling!

 

Step 1. Make sure your rollers are set up properly. Is the rubber belt attached and ready to go (see photo below)?


 

 

Step 2 - Place your rollers 6"-12" from a wall, or place a sturdy chair beside the rollers to assist you to get on and off your bike. Then place your bike on the rollers.

 

 

Step 3 - Now that you have covered some basic safety steps, you can get ready to mount your bike. Place your right foot on the side bridge of your rollers (careful - this can be a bit slippery).

 


Step 4 - Throw your leg over the top tube, while keeping your foot on the bridge, and grab the chair. You are now ready to climb onto your bike with the support of the chair.


 

Step 5 - Clip your shoes into the pedals. Keep holding the chair!


 


Step 6 - Get into a comfortable position on your bike and start to pedal slowly. Continue holding on to the chair and start to find your centre of balance while you add a bit of pressure to the pedals.

 

 

Step 7 - Keep your eyes on your handlebar to begin with and continue pedaling - slowly increase your pedal cadence.

 

 

Step 8 - Slowly move your hand from the chair to the handlebar - don't take your focus off the bar. You're riding! Continue a smooth cadence and you will start to adapt. Maybe listen to some music or watch a video? As you start to gain confidence bring your head up to level and relax your shoulders. Well done!

 

 

Step 9 - How do I get off!? Slowly reduce your cadence and pressure on the pedals and grab the chair again. Once you have a good hold on the chair or wall the simplest way to slow down is to stop pedaling . . .

 


Step 10 - Unclip your left or right shoe (not both!) and place your foot firmly on the rollers step or on the ground. Now unclip the other. Voila fini!

 

You're now finished your first session on your new rollers. It’s easier said than done, but with a little bit of courage you will be 'rolling' quickly. Once you can ride a rollers comfortably your training will no longer be constrained by weather, traffic or location.
