Cycling Coach: Welcome Matt McNamara to our team!

Cyclingnewsasia would like to welcome our newest contributor - a huge round of applause for professional cycling coach Matt McNamara!

Coach Matt at the Bay Area Super Prestige Races this year. . . so fast he is a blur. . .

Matt: Greetings to the fans and followers of Cyclingnewsasia.  I am very pleased to be the newest contributor to the coaching forum and look forward to sharing a wide variety of ideas, insights, perspectives and opinions over the coming months.  My fascination with cycling goes back to a 1985 Sports Illustrated article about Greg LeMond at the Tour De France in my high school library. . .

Thumbing through the pages I was transported to never before heard-of places like Luz Ardiden and the Col du Tourmalet. I was immediately hooked by the difficulty  and beauty of the sport. I still am…

I’ve been racing since 1986 and started coaching in 1994. I was part of the first Expert/Level 2 certification class offered by USA Cycling in 1995 and have continued my progression,  attaining my Level 1 (elite) certification in 2004, and my power certification this past year.  I have a B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Continuing education is a central tenant of my coaching and my writing. There is always something new to learn!

In 2004, after spending seven years as the Adventures and Fitness Director at San Jose State University, I quit my job, flew to Italy to get married, and started my company, Sterling Sports Group (www.sterlingwins.com), so I could do what I loved full time. Oh yea, and my wife got pregnant.  It was a big year. . .

Since then I’ve been fortunate to bring my passion for cycling to athletes both locally and around the world thanks to innovations in technology that allow us to teach real world skills via a helmet cam, take a webinar, chat online, or simply plan and manage a training program remotely. Ironically, one of my early inspirations was Coach Mike Carter, though at the time he was just Mike Carter bad-ass pro! Growing up in Colorado he was a regular on group rides out of Boulder and rode for some really great squads like AC Pinarello and Coors Light. Though he certainly wouldn’t recall a Cat 3 sitting on his wheel on those long winter rides, I do certainly remeber sitting there. That said, I am very pleased to be in the company of experienced and dedicated coaches and athletes of the caliber of Mike Carter and Max Shute. These guys know cycling and performance physiology.  I am equally thrilled at the opportunity to lend my insights and methodologies to the burgeoning Asian cycling movement. Asia is truly on the upswing and I want to be a part of that growth and learning.

How about a quick Q&A?

Family Life

Name: Matt McNamara
Where Do You Live: Sunnvale, CA (Northern California rocks!)
My Family: My wife Starr, Daughter Mia, age 5, and two cats whose names change on Mia’s whim
Favorite Thing To Do When Not Cycling/Working: playing with Mia is a constant joy. That laugh, that smile, that trust that daddy will keep her safe. That is life. I help my wife with gardening a lot (meaning I dig lots of holes and move stuff), I love politics and a good discussion. I’ve also really gotten into cooking of late and found that I can follow a recipe pretty well.
My Favorite Place: Italy! We were married in Positano on the Amalfi coast, but pretty much anywhere in Italy is ok with me . .

Coaching

How I Got Into Coaching? Looking back it was a natural progression from my first haphazard ‘training plans’ written on poster board as a 10 year old to stumbling upon Exercise Physiology/kinesiology after spending a couple of years as a Political Science major. My first coaching gig came about when the owner of a gym I was working at asked me to coach is wife who was a professional mountain biker – talk about getting thrown into the deep end!

The Best Thing About Coaching: It’s a toss up between having an excuse to lose myself in reading and researching the physiology and culture of cycling, or watching my athletes learn the nuances of the sport and have those break through moments.

The Worst Thing About Coaching: The steady decline in my own training time as I’ve become more successful.  I just need to get more efficient I guess . . .

One Sentence Coaching Philosophy: The pinnacle of performance is built on the foundation of consistency!

My Coaching Strengths: power based training and understanding the importance of balancing athletic aspirations with the rest of your life.

What Goals Do I Have For Coaching: To continually refine and improve the complex relationship between training correctly and performance; and to communicate that effectively to others

What Goals Do I Have For Sterling Sports Group: To continue to build our reputation around the world, bring on several associate coaches, and establish our first brick and mortar Performance Center in the next couple of years

Athletics

Favorite Accomplishment: Success at Road, Track, Cyclocross, and Mountain Bike including a State Championship (criterium), and medals in time trial, cyclocross and track at the district level. Love the inter-discipline skills!

Biggest Missed Opportunity: Either getting fired as Director Sportif of the Specialized/Mt Dew Global Mountain Bike Team in 1997 (d’oh!), or not having the focus and committment to push through to become a professional cyclist

Current Goals: To be better at 40 than I was at 30! This month I started training for the 2010 Cyclocross season! My first goal is to find the consistency that’s been lacking since CX Nationals in December!

What Do I Ride: I currently have a Specialized Tarmac on the road, a Louis Garneau on track a 1994 Klein Rascal rigid single speed, and I ride a sweet Leopard CX1 Carbon ‘Cross bike for cyclocross, but I’m working to get a full suspension mountain bike for the first time in 9 years!

Any Other Sports: I enjoy moutaineering and climbing. I’ve climbed Mount Shasta (4390m), Mount Whitney (highest point in the US, 4392m), and the Mexican Volcanoes (5700m) among others. I am thinking about tackling a ½ Ironman this year as well.

We are extremely proud to offer the likes of Matt McNamara, Michael Carter and Max Shutes' years of cycling 'know how' to our readers. Have a question you aren't sure about? Keen on getting coached, but not sure where to start? Contact us here and we can help!
