Cycling Coach: How to use Tactics in a flat race

Welcome to another installment of TACTICS where our resident expert Mr. Michael Carter gives you some insight on what tactics to use to dominate your local flat road race or criterium

Like many things in life - knowledge is power, and like all races, you want to take stock of the course, your competition, your teammates, the weather and even your self! Even on a flat course, all these elements will be the underlying factors that determine your tactics and also the outcome of the race.

 

In cycling the features of the course and the weather tend to play significant roles in determining the “selection” of who will make the split and who will miss it. Of course, in races with big climbs you know that the race will split up on the climb, and who will be in the first group. On technical courses (courses with a lot of tight corners) it is a safe bet that only the riders with good bike handling skills will be able to break away from the main peloton. Races in harsh weather will see the hard men prevail!

 

Racing on a featureless flat course allows for riders to draft and follow in the back quite easily – unless there is wind. Wind can definitely be the determining factor and it will not take very much wind to cause splits to occur.

 

There are still tactics that you can employ to provide you with the best possible outcomes. Knowledge is power, so do your research on your competition, who they are, and how they have been riding in recent races. For example, if you know you are competing against a rider who has been on good form in time trials, then you know that you can not let that rider get up the road - at least not without you! If you are racing against a team that is known to be very organized, then you know that they will be protecting a sprinter if they have one, or waiting until the wind conditions will help them split the race apart. You will have to watch for when the cross wind starts, they can all go to the gutter and allow just enough room on the road so the last teammate they have is protected from the wind, and the rest of the field is fighting for position and that precious place out of the wind. This tactic will of course work even for your team. If you have at least three or more riders on your team, you can have your team all come to the front and then when the cross winds start, have your team do a team time trial on the opposite side of the road from where the wind is coming from. If the wind is from the right, you want to line your team up on the left side of the road so only your team is protected.

Then you ride as hard as you can ensuring everyone is pulling through as smoothly as possible. In no time you willl have the rest of the field battling for a position behind you as you and your team ride away from them!

 

If your team is not able to get to the front, you can always start this type of team time trial at any point while you are in a cross wind. This will allow you to protect yourselves in an echelon - you will be amazed at how much faster you can all if you are notl groveling in the gutter!


What if there is no wind?

If there is no wind, then you will have to watch to see how aggressive the race is. If there are a lot of continual attacks, watch for the point where the field grows tired of chasing. If you time it right, you can attack and no one will give chase – you are off! This varies immensely and so it is difficult to say how many attacks will happen before the field tires of chasing. Sometimes, it is the fourth attack that succeeds, sometimes it is not until the ninth or even tenth attack or even more that the field will finally concede. You have to try to read how the field is responding – if you hear riders sighing with grief after attacks, or struggling to respond, you know it is getting close to that moment when you should attack!


If you can see that no attacks will succeed and the race will finish all together, then it is time to set up your own sprinter for the lead out or, if you are racing individually, you have to play off of the other riders or teams, and position yourself in the leadouts for the sprint.


Someone will always try to get away and avoid the sprint (especially if they are not sprinters) and if sprinting is not your strong point, then you will want to attack far out enough (How far? Maybe 10 K, maybe only 4 K - it depends on the course) that everyone will let you go. If you can gain a small gap, you are in for a drag race to the finish line!

 

If you are a sprinter and you have a good team, then you will want to follow the lead out tactics that I have written about previously (that report is found here on Cyclingnewsasia at http://www.cyclingnewsasia.com/en/coach/39-general/144-coach-tactics-qhow-toq). If you do not have a team, then follow the strongest team or riders and let them act as your lead out.

 

The sprint - what to do!

The single biggest mistage riders make it to start their sprint too early! A lack of patience. If you jump too early, unless you are very powerful, you will be overtaken by the riders that have been able to get in your draft and sling shot themselves around you - gaining a lot of speed over everyone else.

So be sure you know the winds, your teammates and your competition and make a plan. in bike racing, the way the race develops is rarely as you want it to, but this is why it is such a fantastic sport. You have to have the ability to know when to attack or work hard, and when to conserve so that you can make your move when it will have the biggest and most beneficial impact in the race. Know what to do under all circumstances and do not over analyze. Make your move with authority and go for it!

 

KNOW WHAT TO DO UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES AND DO NOT OVER ANALYZE. MAKE YOUR MOVE WITH AUTHORITY, AND GO FOR IT!
